97 xp wont turn over.

When I put the key on the machine beeps. When I press the start button I get an error beep and the starter does not turn over. With the key in, I short the starter and it turns over but I get no spark on either of the plugs. (wondering if no spark is part of the security coming from the computer) I open the electrical box where the battery, starter, and plug wires go to and the fuse is fine. Any ideas?

try the starter relay in the battery box.you can jump it wth a screwdriver.thats usually what it is.if it gets wet or old they go out.ebay for about 25$.

I shorted the starter relay and then shorted it to the battery and pressed the start button and I wasn't getting any spark so I was thinking it was electric module (mempc or whatever) but I still wasn't getting any spark. I decided to change the relay anyways. I was wondering if the computer was looking for some signal from the relay or current/voltage to increase or drop across the relay. My guess paid off.
