got mod engine with high torqe starter in my 97 xp, turns over without plugs but will not with plugs screwed in. Compression is at 185

Possible Battery Issue

Might need to charge/replace your battery? how did you get it to turn over to do Compression Test? Did turn over with the compression gauge in the cylinder head? If so, and now it won't it's likely your battery.

That sounds like it would make sense.

Could be the starter. You might want to get a load test done to it. Not really sure. Anyone else have any ideas?

You've managed to do a compression test? Did you do this test with the same battery? How long ago? If the starter spins the crank with no plugs, but cannot turn over with plugs, your looking at a battery or starter. But again if this is the same starter used to do the compression test, I'd bet it's the battery.

its a brend new starter and a brand new batery justa bought the starter last week and the batery has never been use yet but it is a year old batery. but i tried a car battery ? how do you do a load test

Probably just need to charge for a few hours, does the "car" battery have a known good charge? As in did you take it out of your daily driver?

no it was just some battery that was laying on the ground in the garage, and it did drain it in the prosess of turning over.

Okay definately the battery, do you have a battery charger? If so, charge your battery up and she should turn the engine over with plugs in. You will not be able to start the engine with just a battery charger hooked up, unless your charger is designed to do so.

check your hot cables and also your ground cables. if they are old or corroded they might not be able to carry the right amount of amps. i had this problem on my 97 xp 800.

yo can buy premade batterty cables from wally world or napa thats what i did and solved my problems.

Ok so here is the deal now it cranks over only by jumping the starter relay that I melted esterday. I know wasnt teh smarytest thing to do bu t i just wanted to hear it fire, which it DIDNT!! The damn thing cranks but does not fire, what else can it be?
