It’s an Alan plug here.....

Then that’s not the original 1997 engine, it’s a 1996. They added the plugs in 1997.

It should be here....

I think this whole "Oil in the Gears" thing is such crap. It says to add 30ml to that area, when I know that half of it leaks out into the PTO crank case and gets sucked up on break-in. Not sure how much of that oil remains there. I actually used a sealed bearing on both ends of my counter balance shaft as I can't imagine much fuel/oil makes it to that bearing to lubricate it. It is a great place for water to collect if you ever get some in your cases. Terrible design imo.

That area gets plenty of oil from normal running and the "add 30ml" is really just for a new dry engine.
As IDoSeaDoo said the big issue is water ingestion. There is no good way to get it out if you have an early one with out the drain plug so you just need to run it long and hard to burn out as much as you can and hope for the best.

The really should have sealed that area separately like they did on the 951.
