Anytime you have electrical gremlins on a 97 XP, the very first thing you should do is remove the MPEM, check all pins for corrosion, pop the face plates off the AMP connectors, look at the barrel contacts for any signs of corrosion. Then take a #55 drill bit (.052" diameter) and insert the shank of the bit into each contact to test for firm fit.
