new to the site, hope I'm in right post.
Bought used 97 GTX a week ago. got it home cleaned it up, took battery out charged.
Put back in cranked right up:p
ran for just a few min's turned off. Cranked everyday for about 4 days, even hooked up water hose up and let run for about 30 min's.
Now the bad, went out the other day engine turns over and over, NO fire pulled plugs and checked. Checked every connections I could find, put a little grease on them. still NO fire. any and all suggestions.

Charlie

Welcome,

First... even on the hose... don't run it for long. The Driveshaft seal is a carbon ring, and without water under the hull... it will over heat, and crack. If you have bad cavitation... you will know why.

Second... the 800 engine has a known problem. The pulse coil in the engine can break from it's mount. When that happens... no fire. Remove the MAG cover, and see if it's still on the mount.

This one has a 787 engine,same difference?
Previous owner said he would ride, ran fine, shut/turn off would not crank back until almost cool.
When I take off MAG cover were is pulse coil?
The MAG cover has never been off, still has paint intact.

Yep... the 787 AKA "The 800." (FYI. 717 = 720, and 947=951)

The PO's problem sounds more like a carb issue. A set of aftermarket diaphragms or leaky needles will cause that problem.

The no fire thing sounds like the pick-up. Once you get the cover off... you will see a small coil to one side of the flywheel. That's the ignition pickup. When they break loose... the CDI stops firing.

hi there before you go pulling off the mag cover. remove the plugs ground them & turn thr motor over to check for a spark. no spark then do as dr honda says. if it is sparking then most likely a fuel problem. so put a squirt of fuel down the jugs' refit plugs & crank it if it runs its a fuel problem for sure!

already done that and nothing, not even a small spark
Even got new ones just to see if that might be it.

Well I took to a local shop about 20 miles away. Got there and it crank right up. Bought a new battery got it home, placed new battery and nothing. took it back yo shop and NO fire again. Left it there, called the other day they were trying different things and still no fire. Finally he put everything back on, and it fired right up.

Thanks
Charlie

Just talked to him and he does not know what wrong. Wants to take on lake, saying there is something wrong trying to get it to quite again.
So basically he wants it to quite, and try running the problem down some more

When you get an intermittent problem... it sucks.

BUT... sicne you have an 800... if the pick-up coil is good... then the CDI is going out. The 800 uses a DC-CDI, and the section that pumps the voltage from 12v (battery) to +300v (for the coil) has a tendency of burning out.

He said he tried a computer box and still would not fire. Put everything back on and it fired right up. He thinks there a short or bad connection. At least thats what he says.

That's just one more strike for the CDI.

I would just replace it.

I stand corrected, he has not put a computer on. How much is a used one going for?
He is wanting to charge about $400 for a used one if thats the problem.
