97 GTX issue

In need of some help. Purchased a new to me 97 GTX. Motor was trashed so no water test. Anyhow, had new engine installed and went for maiden voyage today. Of course I am in the break in procedure but when on the water, the ski could not get over 14 mph and had take me off. The engine would rev to approximately 7000 rpms according to the gauge. Any ideas what to look for? I am thinking I need to check the wear ring but could that really be the problem or is there something else I should look for?

Hoping so... trying to find out how to check it now but from visual it appears it may have a large gap

Post a pic..either way, if it is the problem, you'll have bigger ones if continuing to break in the motor...

The pumps' not creating pressure, starving the motor of water...

Think I found my problem. Wear ring looks trashed. Also I think my prop needs filed back smooth- several gouges in find but I think it is salvageable. Thoughts?

Yep, wear ring is gone and yes you can clean that edge up with a file.

That is what I thought. I guess I will go ahead and replace it and the one in my GTI along with the pump oil just to make sure I am all good in both!
