I took my 97 GTX out to the lake yesterday for the first time since having the carb professionally rebuilt and it ran great for probably an hour and a half (not quiet as much power as I expected, but still ran MUUCH better than before and was easily getting 7K rpm), then while one of my buddies was on it, he said he spun a donut on it then it wouldn't get up on plane anymore. I took it out for a quick test ride and noticed it wouldn't get over 6K rpms and wouldn't get on plane anymore. It has that automatic trim, so I was thinking maybe it wasn't working anymore. but while idling back to the trailer I heard 4 faint beeps (the beeper has gone out or is going out), then a pause, then 4 more beeps, then a pause etc etc. Nothing came up on the gauge or information center. I took a quick look around under the seat, checked the plugs for tightness and connection to the wires and didn't see anything out of the ordinary. It still starts right up and runs fine up until 6K rpm. I did notice a metallic rattling sound coming from the prop / impeller area that I will need to track down but I'm not sure if that's related or not..

Any thoughts on what could be causing this? I did a quick google search and some people said that 4 beeps was related to the MPEM not talking to the CDI but I didn't see a test or solution to this issue. Would that cause my RPM issue? Thanks for the help guys !

There is no description in the DESS section for 4 short beeps.

4 LONG beeps (while installing the safety lanyard on the switch) could mean MPEM cannot communicate with the CDI module......but I believe the CDI has been incorporated into the mpem, SO....its sounding like your mpem may be on the fritz, BUT you say it starts right up and hangs up at 6000 rpm which would intimate that the mpem is working to at least get the ski up and running.

Couple things (learned here):
1) can you VERIFY that the carbs were re-built with genuine MIKUNI parts kits.....there are aftermarket kits that'll work (pieces and parts) BUT will cause nothing but headaches once the machine gets on the water (I KNOW this!)
2) Diagnosing problems on a trailer is much different than on the water (obviously)....with the ski bouncing around in the water, everything is shaking and thumping and bumping, so intermittent electrical problems may not show up on the trailer
3) You can expect a fair degree of rattling, etc from the ski out of the water coming from the rear/impeller area but hellacious noises need to be checked....the impellor could be in contact with the wear ring or the wear ring could be compromised and you would get all sorts of racket from back down there.
4) your ski is 22 years old - age = problems, so lots of TLC are required to keep these old goats functional.

I have a few 96 and 97 GTXs. 6K RPM is about 40mph on the GPS. If it isn't getting on plane you have an issue with the propulsion system. Check your wear ring. You might just have something stuck in there. That might also explain you RPM issue.

Later model skis give 4 short beeps to let you know the key is in the DESS post. It can be annoying. My GTXs don't do that. I'm happy when the beep at all. LOL

Thank you all for the suggestions! I really appreciate it. I will do some research on the wear ring and get back to you.
