hey im new to the whole jetski thing actually just picked on up about two weeks ago. up until today everything seemed to run fine. was out with a freind and hit a wake, didnt launch out of the water or nething like that but as soon as i came down it seemed like i lost power in the ski. it would just rev out but not go anyware as if i was in netural. after pushing it shore i took the seat off and the hull was about half way full of water. i looked everything over figureing it was an exit hose for water or somthing but all the hoses seem to be intact.

re:taking on water

check your engine mounts and drive shaft: see the other thread entitiled 98 GTX taking on water.

thanks but would that would just haveing to much water in the hull make it so that the engine just rebs out nd doesnt go neware

Your right I didn't quite read your full thread. Could be a drive shaft issue best thing to do put it in water, stick it in neutral open up your seat rev it up and see if the shaft is spinning. I'm not sayin this is it but try everything. Also check your reverse gate system just to make sure a cable hasn't snapped and it's not 'dropped' down to neutral, highly unlikely but you never know. Check to see if there is any water movement behind the ski when you rev it in neutral.

Forgot to mention check the impeller through the grate you never know something might have got stuck in the impeller.

yea when i ran it at home on the trailer the drive shaft was spinning, and i can see the impeller spinning. im kind of new to the whole jetski thing but im a good mechanic. when i look at the drive shaft tho there is a ruber seal that goes about halfway up the shaft and sealed to the hull ware the shaft goes threw. however there seems to be nothing at the other end of it to seal it around the shaft and it has alot of play when i move it around and when i flooded my hull it seems thats ware all the water was comeing out of. i guess my real question is what goes on that end to seal it to the shaft? is it like a bearing or something that i may of blown?

also i was just looking at it and noticed that i have alot of playin in my driveshaft im not sure but i dont think thats a good thing right. like if i grab the shaft i can move it up and down and right to left. could i have broken the shaft or is this suppose to be like that

kass....pull the pump. Undo the steering/reverse cable, then undo the 4-17mm nuts at end of pump, then pull ur out. Inspect the impellor and wear ring, then go inside of ski, and push the "steel" ring toward back of boat, to expose the snap ring. Pop that off, and then out comes the driveshaft. At the "steel" coolar, there should be a "carbon" ring that rides against it, along wit hthe accordian boot, that clamps the carbon ring to it...inspect the ring for cracks/chips...

ok i took a look at it it seems that the "carbon" ring is there but is verry loose around the the drive shaft and doesnt seem to be sealing anything, also it seems that the drive shaft has discondected or broken off from the impeller

Bingo! Seems to me that you found your problem BUT run it by Timmyboy he's seems to pretty much know about the impeller stuff.

hey just thought ide follow up on my situation, after looking over everything u guys have suggested i realized that i must of broken my motor mounts and the engine shifted foward thus disingageing my driveshaft and breaking the seal ware the shaft comes threw the hull.

'99 gti taking on water too

I am having a similair problem as kass727. Water is coming through where the shaft comes through the hull. The protection hose boot seems loose but i guess it's supposed to be like that so I am assuming the seal is broken. The question I have is what needs to be replaced. Is it the hull insert which is part number 292000075 or is there so other seal andwhat would it be called and the part number...how do you replace it? thanks for you time

idk what the life span is normaly for them but mine wore out verry quickly bc my motormounts were bad and it the engine was shifting causeing the drive shaft to rub on the ring. ide double check your mounts to insure thats not the cause of the wearing bc if they do finially go like mine did you will be swiming back with ur hull full of water.
