97 GTI, no power in water

New to this forum. So thanks in advance for your help. Motor will not rev up in the water, does just fine on the trailer. some Back ground to what happened. the seadoo was in the water this weekend and ran just fine for about 1 1/2 hours. but then all of a sudden it had no power, full throttle it would only go about 10 mile an hour. limp back to trailer and when we took it out we noticed the plugs were not in, so the craft had a lot of water in the hull. Figured this has happen to me before, had a exhaust pipe come lose and fill up the hull with water even more then was in the hull this time, got the water out quick and started it up on trailer, seem to rev up just fine. Figured I was all set, day was late, so we keep the seadoo on the trailer for the night. Took it back out in the morning again. this time double checking the plugs are in, but still does not seem to have any power in the water, only go 10 mph. put it back on trailer, then check the inlet grate, all clean, took out the spark plugs, plugs look normal, checked compression, both have about 130 to 140 PSI, about what they had when I did service on the unit last month.
just a note, since the service it has been in the water and run just fine for over 7 to 8 hours.

Any idea what is causing this.

Thanks
Rich

Sounds like the carbs might need to be cleaned or rebuilt. And Im sure if u look hard enough on this forum you'll see all information needed as to how to accomplish that. Simple steps first, check for spark, fuel delivery. Fuel lines in your hull may be old grey style tempo lines. Notorious for goopy deposits getting sucked in to carbs. Har far up did the water go inside the hull? Past the carbs? Water ingestion?

It only went up to bottom of motor with water, I don't think there would be any chance of water ingestion, I will check out the fuel lines, that carb is only one season, put it on new in April 2010. but if I have the old fuel lines then maybe it is the carb.

It it went to the top of the motor your carbs ingestion water. Did u pull the plugs and crank any water out of the block? Its a must

I pulled the plugs and did a compression check I did see or feel any water coming out of the cylinders. The compression was between 130 to 140 on both cylinders. Motor seems to run just fine on the trailer, and will idle in the water just fine, but as soon as you give it gas, it just boggs down and only goes about 10 mph.

I had the same WOT issue with one of my XP's. Actually ran great for a couple minutes then all of a sudden no response from any throttle position. Had the old grey lines and swapped then looked at carbs. Couldnt even see through the filters. Diaphrams were toast. Seems like your carb. I believe thats a 717 single carb.

Does seem to be looking that way, I wish I would have know this problem with the gas lines before, I replaced the motor and the carb last winter, I could have easily changed the lines then.... Live and learn.

You tell me, I have the 97 GTI and 96 XP and a 21 Foot Caliber 1 open bow, that is 3 holes in the water I pore money into, I just got the Seadoos two seasons ago, as the kids are now older and enjoy the seadoos, I just dont.....

Ive had 2 97 XP's since new. And an 03 GTI that just blew the crank saturday. I posted about it. Its always something. Even when they dont run they still look cool behind a super lifted Avalanche.

yeah owning any watercraft is a labor of love. it does sound like a classic fuel line issue your having on the gti. its the green goo is a chemical reaction to the brass on the fuel selector value and carbs. i would check that selector valve first, if it clogged it will cause your issue as well.

also i put a see-though fillter right before the carb(s) on everyone i do. extra insurrance and let you see if anything is going wrong.

P.S. check your fuel filter, remover your storage been and look toward the back of the ski and you'll see it, you could have water in there causing and issue as well.

Yes a labor of love, I found a good post on here about changing the fuel lines. I think I will pick up new lines and start there this weekend.
Yes, I know where the fuel filter is, I will check it, I just replaced the element last March 201.
Do you think I might need a new fuel selector switch ? or can I clean it. I think that was already replaced in 2009, by the dealer, when I got the seadoo, it had been setting for over ten years, took it to the dealer then, to make sure I would not have this kind of problems, with the gas delivery system, I guess you live and learn, you would think they would just change out the lines then, this must not be the first time this has happen. Right
Well, after all is said and done I will be a fair seadoo guy soon, on these old units, I have changed the fuel baffle in 2009 (gauge not working), repaired the exhaust pipe 2009, (came lose) removed and replaced complete motor 2010, and new carb in 2010, (bolt from cracked carb fell down and killed the rotory valve) and new battery 2011, (yea, it got a new battery in 2009 when I picked it up ) and done annual service last two years, all work my self to save time and money and to learn how these things work. and still can not keep it on the water with out more "Labor of Love"

Nothing beats being on the water solo with an XP underneath me. Street bikes dont compare. When I ride I feel pretty fortunate for what I have. If a ski breaks down I see no reason to get upset. Its a luxury item. If I couldnt afford them, Id sell em. Like I said, at least they look good being towed behind my truck.

The problem is I never ride the XP, my son never wants to give up that ride when the XP and the GTI are out. and most of the time both are being rode by the kids. I just hang on my boat keeping to an eye, the best I can, on both of them. But I seem to keep them anyway, "for the kids sake", like a bad marriage. And like a bad marriage keep paying.....
Well, will pick up new fuel line and change out all of them, and hope to be able to clean out the fuel selector valve and the carb... and the kids will be back out on them. this weekend.

OK, I wanted to give an update, as to help the next person with same problems. I want to thanks post on here from "Bills86e" (96 seadoo gti problems) That gives a great step by step on replacing fuel lines and one from "JPX" (troubleshoot fuel delivery problems: low revs, bogging, surging) great step by step also, with pictures. I ended up replacing all the fuel lines, checked and cleaned the fuel filter inside the crab, it was a mess, figured I had it. I still checked the fuel filter up in side the storage area, it was clean, cleaned the fuel switch. figured I had the problem, took it down and floated, still not right, went and replaced the spark plugs like the one post said to do first, and bingo, runs great... so thanks to all..
