Took her out last weekend and idled out of the no-wake zone for about 5 min, seemed fine.
Got passed and into lake ,opened her up and ran fine, for about another 5 mins then just died.
Waited another 4-5 min, got it started again was able to low throttle back to launch. Got to launch and shut off , waited about 10 min. tried to start but would not. Checked plugs they were both ok (no fouling) , but did not smell alot of gas on them. Fuel problem??? Fuel filter??? Raves??? Clogged petcock??? got it home and got it running but it was rough at first then smoothed out, motor shook alot at first but then seemed to run smooth but would do this after shutting off and trying it again, same thing rough than smooth out. Anybody have this problem??? 787 motor.

Carb filters????? any help would be appreciated. Many thanks.

Well did a comp check on the mag side cylinder and 35 psi , pto showin 150
Not sure what happened , piston has some pitting on top but no holes , but cylinder has a slight gouge in wall and compared to pto cylinder ring is not visable all the way around.
Just bought the dam thing and comp was good when bought it. How could I've lost that cylinder so fast???
Whats the best topend rebuild kit for these 787's.????

Hey factory Give me an email with your number I'll call ya to discuss this , I just called Greg at Sands to see what he'd charge , but I know another guy too in Holland.
Email me at specweldinc@yahoo.com

I want to see if your problem is like mine , Whats up with these boats?????
I can't afford this .
Give me your number or just call me on my cell asap if ya can.

Maybe we can put are heads together and firgure out what the hell goin on here with these motors.

I'd like to get with some one locally with simular issues with their boat and try to stop or nail down or figure out why this keeps happening.
One guy has gone through his 3rd motor now and he never got past break-in period with it and it blows pistons and rings and the same syntom with the pitted cylinder and rings going, I'm kinda scared to think when I put a new SBT engine in it , if there is just a slight issue your going to blow your motor.
And this guy has followed the break in instructions to a tee, WTF
Also seems in most cases the mag side goes , can anybody tell me , what would cause this , Not tryin to point a finger at SBT but if all these guys are following procedures then whats going on?????

Yeah I am at work right now slammed. Love to sit and chat on the phone, but work is being a PITA on top of the boat being a PITA.

The extra crappy part about SBT is if you blow a casing. There is something like a $900 charge for them to repair the casing if I recall.

Greg from Sands is going to have my Challenger in there tomorrow at 8:00 A.M sharp. He thinks I have an electrical or fuel injection issue. I am not an engine savvy kind of guy so I just can't do much more than change plugs, clean raves, and clean a fuel filter. Thankfully the engine still turns over...

I hope this is a small fix.....I hope. Or I may end up selling mine. This thing has been a constant hole in the water. With all the money dumped in to it....oh man, its frustrating me just thinking about it.

I was on the phone with Greg about 2:30 sitting in the Grand River floating toward the leather factory. I ended up having to have a 30hp Zodiac bring me back in to the dock. Really pathetic.

I am a complete idiot. I filled up the oil tank earlier this year. While looking inside the engine bay I notice said oil is gone. I look at the lines....air in the lines........sweet.

Now we have to tear the engine out, bleed the lines, fill up the oil tank, then see if I stripped this rotary valve shaft.

This thing....

Most likely mine is stripped all the hell, and we have to see if SBT allows us to even take a look at that, or if we have to send it back to them. Supposedly this is warrantied by SBT......as long as I didn't blow a casing

Hey , happens to the best of us. So you oil starved the rotary valve area?
Is it possible to take the rotary valve cover off to get to that gear?
What did greg say?

Greg said his buddy is coming over at 11:30 and they are going to bleed the lines, fill it up with oil, and call SBT and see if they are allowed to take a look at the rotary valve shaft to see if/how bad I have chewed that thing up.

I have the 2 year no fault warranty under SBT. So that should come in handy now......

He said the way it sounded when he tried to turn it over was that the rotary valve is making some extra noise. So he sounds pretty convinced that atleast the rotary valve and what not is toast.

In the end I could continue to turn the motor over, so I don't know....lets hope that I didn't blow a casing ($900 plus labor...), and lets hope the rotary valve is actually in pristine condition (120 plus labor or more).

Where you get'n these figures, if its a "no fault" warranty? Or is it the money spent on removing the engine/part?

Well I'm crossing my fingers for ya here. I'm no mechanic but I'm close now due to reading up on this stuff. Decided I'm taking mine to Flytech Motorsports over in nunica and he's pretty good.
Ya the oil thing is critical on these motors, I always check mine before I go out faithfully , can't afford to overlook things anymore with the costs involved.
Hopefully just the brass gear is the only problem , they are brass for a reason , softer than the rest of it, not going to know till he gets in there "if" SBT will give the authorization to do so with out srewin your warranty up.
Always do a precheck on your boat before you take it out, hind site is always 20/20 but pays off.

Mines going to Flytech tomarrow and hopefully my cases are good for the core , whole shootin match is costin me about 1680.00 with SBT replacement and carbs rebuilt and if the case is cracked I'm screwed.
I can't afford any more costs at this point.
I think I will do all the work next time myself (hopeing there is no next time lol)
I have to get mine ready , have to empty my fuel tank out because I have no idea how old the previous owner had it in there and if he stabalized it or not during winter. And I'm also emptying out the oil and going Quicksilver full synthetic on the new SBT. It had the mineral oil in it originally and was told to go to the synthetic because its just better. We'll see what happens I'm doing alot of praying.

SBT doesn't allow you to do anything inside the engine (aka you are not allowed to change those rotary valve parts yourself). So if you ever need to do this fix, you have to take it out, crate it, and send it to SBT.

Joy.

So Greg is probably working on it right now, and all hes going to be able to do is bleed the oil lines, fill it up with oil, check compression, read any error codes that may or may not be there. And either send me on my way with a $250-300 bill, or send my engine to SBT and do all of the above and probably cost me even more.

I just want a boat for the 4th of July. We have like 2 business weeks as of today to get an engine from SBT and put it in if this is the case. I hope to be breaking in a new engine before the 4th if we have to go that route. I am not sure how you can check my the rotary valves without opening up the engine.....

Greg said this is a way to lock you in to them. You can't replace your casings for instance on your warrantied SBT engine and send it back for a new one. They will charge you up to $800 if it cannot be welded at SBT for the casings.

These little 2 bangers are a little costly, especially the repairs! But everyone on here pretty much agrees the 4cyl rotax's are even more expensive to maintain.
I am like wow......

Where in Muskegon did you plan on boating when you get your boat? Muskegon lake? Lake Michigan? Spring Lake?

Duck lake up in N. Muskegon due to its small and if you do get pooped out in the middle of the lake ,it's not far from shore and usually theres guys out there that will give ya a tow.
Good break in lake for my new motor,
Lakes easy to get to and no launch fees ,. but you will need a state park sticker is all. Muskegon lake is just too big to try and work the bugs out of a boat , get stranded then you have to pay Sea-tow bucks to bring you back "NOT" lol. Well unless someone nice enough to tow ya in and give them some gas money , Money money money, spend spend spend.
Boats =$$$$
This sucks.

I've been told it takes alot to crack a case ,it can happen , but hopefully its just the brass gear. If that is the case is cracked then I would puul the motor anywho and find a good used case fron ebay or elsewhere and maybe greg can do a rebuild or send back to SBT and start out with a new motor w/core and new warranty.
Anyway you slice it , it's going to cost.
But if my new motor goes , i'm doin the next one myself . Screw it. or sell it and try tennis.
