Ive got a 97 challenger 1800. The driver side motor will run good for a few minutes then shut off, when trying to restart motor hard to turn over due to overheating. At first i thought it was a not getting fuel, thought maybe a clogged fuel selector valve. I turned the fuel selector halfway between on and off and it ran for about twenty minutes the shut off again and wouldn't start back up. I opened up motor found the rings shot. Rebuild top end completely and tested it again. Motor ran strong for a 5 to 10 minutes and shut off again like before. The motor was very hot. Pulled the plugs they looked good, didnt look like it was running rich or lean. Pulled oil pump to see if it was working. Does anyone know of a good way to test the oil pump? I pulled the feeder lines to cylinders off both oil pumps and bumped over motors they were working the same so I think its not an oil pump problem. If anyone has any info or thoughts on possible problems, that would be very helpful. Thanks

The FSM has a bench test method listed. Fairly simple...using a power drill, you measure the output. This website has the FSM if you don't already have one.

I am working on the same boat....few questions:

thats just to test the oil pumps though, what kind of internals are there in the pump? is it either "it works or it doesnt" deal or is there something that could cause it to flow less oil than it should?(assuming there are no blockages in the passage ways)

also, what else could cause the engine to get hot and shut off? lack of gas running the engine lean get it hot enough for the engine temp sensor to activate shut down mode? would a dirt\clogged fuel selector valve be able to cause this? the engine has no stumbles or misses when cool and running through the RPM ranges, just gets hot and shuts off. also pulled the hose off the head while boat was in the water running to make sure it was getting water into the engine\pipe\etc and it is. any ideas?
