I know Florida doesn't have much of a winter, but I figured I would take the next couple months to rebuild this xp I picked up. I actually have two, one I got for free which was just a hull. Although it was structurally sound, it was in very poor condition. The other one I picked up a couple weeks ago, I got it as a complete ski that needed the carbs rebuilt. I took that with a grain of salt. The price was right though so I couldn't pass it up.
Drove two hours to check it out and ended up bringing it home
I noticed some damage that was repaired, but didn't fully understand the extent of it until I started tearing it down. Even though it looked good from afar, there was major damage that was repaired very half-assed, and I didn't want to bother fixing it because it'll never be the same. I decided to junk this hull and swap everything into the one I got for free
Some surprises while tearing down the complete(damaged) ski
Carbs looked mint. And I mean mint. I've never seen a set of carbs look this good inside. The pictures don't do them justice. This made me very happy because they're worth about what I paid for the whole ski lol
Mpem looked excellent inside. Zip ties so someone's been in there, but nonetheless super clean
The motor had decent compression but some damage on the pto piston skirt. Bore looked good with not many marks. I will be sending the cylinders to full bore and doing a new top end and gaskets. The bottom end should be good but it's still going to get torn apart and assessed
With everything removed I turned my attention to prepping the good hull. Flipped it over and started wet sanding. This thing has been beached many times!
A pleasant surprise, JD grate. Score!
After the first pass with 180
The deep gouges will be filled with gelcoat. I'm not terribly concerned with the very bottom, as long as it looks decent. I will also be running a keel guard which will cover some of the worse spots
After pressure washing and scrubbing the whole day there's still stains in the bilge that I can not get out. I decided I'm just going to epoxy paint the whole inside white because the stains bother me
