On some previous threads, I talked about getting this old ski running, doing all the fuel line/carburetor rebuild work and still it dies when you give it gas. Took it to a dealer, and he found that something like a screw had fallen through the carbs into the engine and done some damage to the rotary valve. How much he wasn't sure, but quoted $1500 or so to tear it down and fix it--didn't much want to do it, I don't think.

So I'm going to get this XP back and try to fix it myself. Any starting point help? I will have a 97 GTX with the same motor in it (froze up, saltwater damage) that I can use for donor parts if necessary.

I would think the motor blew!! I have seen stuff get into the valve from a piece breaking off a piston or ring.. You need to check the compression in the cylinders.. I am willing to bet one of them is really low.. You can get a rebuilt engine for around $750.00.. If you have some mechanical ability you should be able to do it yourself.. You can find lots of help here when you need it..

No, I've got 150 psi in both cylinders. Dealer said there was damage to the rotary valve cover, a bunch of other gobbledy gook that I won't understand until I get it back in my hands. If there is damage to the rotary valve, would it make sense to fix it myself or just swap out a rebuilt?

Tare down!

it depends how machanically inclined you are i would personally take it aprt and look inside i mean its already junk so whats a little more break down gonna hurt.
