96 xp key question

Went to start the ski over the weekend 70deg that day
Battery was a little low
Charged the battery, now I get and intermittent key issue all light in the guage flash and one beep which means a key mismatch.
Finally got it to work but still intermittent.
Is it bad to leave the key in a box outside?
In have a spare box with key but just trying yo see the issue

The battery could be on its way out even being charged. I would take it and get it load tested before messing with the key.
