How do you know if your carbon ring needs to be changed?

why would water leaking through the carbon ring slow down the ski but revs higher?

The pump makes negative pressure to draw water into the pump tunnel so if the carbon seal is leaking it can let air get sucked past it into the pump causing cavitation since you are pumping air instead of water causing your engine rpm to increase but no forward thrust.
