my 96 seadoo xp has been backfiring without starting. cought fire one time. I replaced the old grey gas lines and cleaned the filters. I have worked on many engines but never a jet ski. No clue how to check the timing and don't know what else to check out. any thoughts?

Check the crank index, it should be 180*. Open Stator cover and check bracket.
You may have MPI metal particle infiltration.

Double check that the fuel lines were connected to correct orfices and your fuel selector is set to:fuel.

Check the timing of the rotary valve. It will spit fuel out of the carbs if the timing is off.

Pull carbs out, and get them cleaned.

I mean, propper strip down.
Just had same problem witht mine xp. That will save you some time. Other wise you need a special puller to take the fly wheel off. Not easy job to do.
Good luck :)

There is gas spitting from the carbs when I turn it over. I cleaned the carbs and just about everything else I could think of to include the rave valves, could messing with them have caused this? i'm not sure how to check the timing on the rotary valve though, could you briefly go over it for me, I would greatly appreciate it, as well, will I need a timing light or any other special tools to do this? Thanks for all the help.

alright, you'll need to remove the intake manifold/rv cover to check the rotary valve. With the cover off, to expose the 1/2 CD looking thing, the end points should be around 10:30-ish and 5:00-ish...these marks are 147*/65*, WITH THE FRONT PISTON AT "TDC"...
