96 xp 787 potential buy?

Hey guys. Im interested in this 96 seadoo xp 787 that came up for sale recently. I tend to wait for the ones to pop up that are cosmetically in great shape especially the hull. This one looks in mint shape .. his price is high though. He’s asking $3500 for it with no trailer .. keep in mind I live in Canada and from what I noticed the mint ones go for around that $3000-$4000 but usually with a trailer. He sent me a video of him taking a compression test and one cylinder was 140 and the other was about 138ish. He says carbs have been rebuilt and fuel lines replaced and that the vts system works. I currently own a 96 gts and really want an xp because they are so iconic with the x4 hull. (The gts is also pretty slow) lol.

What’s your guys opinion?

Well I would say I am about the most qualified to answer this question. I’m in Ontario Canada. I spend a minimum of an hour every day looking through different regions of marketplace at them. I actually have to stop. I posted the 95.5 as a reference. The 95.5 is even more sought after, it has the single gauge hood which I’m told can go for upwards of 600.00 on its own plus the hump seat which has a value all on its own. I’m not sure what but say 500.00. The one in Quebec also comes with a double trailer. 3800.00 with no trailer is a little high in my opinion. Unless he were to lower the price I would bet it will probably go unsold for a very long time. Keep in mind that we are talking about both of these without seeing them in person and without driving them. At 3800.00 I would expect that the engine has been completely rebuilt which at 138 and 140 it has not. I will say he’s not way out in left field if it’s in as good of shape as it looks. I would think 2800.00 would be a fair price for the both of you, however this is from my perspective. Not yours so that could make all the difference. A few things to keep in mind, if that hull and everything is in as good of shape as it looks, it could be a long time till one in that condition comes up again, another thing to consider is that all that cosmetic stuff can be fixed as long as there are no dings in the hull, the gel coat can be wet sanded, cut and polished to look like new but it’s time consuming, like 20 hours to do a decent job. Graphics can be replaced with aftermarket made to look OEM for 95 USD at KRP or 195USD at pwcgraohics seats can be recovered and stenciled but do you want to go through all the work of looking for a non running or running one that needs all this for say 800.00 non running and 1800.00 running but cosmetically tired.? I don’t know. Last thing I will say is if spending money on a water ready machine there’s no way in hell I’m purchasing it for 2800.00 without a water test. Ride it for the first 3 minutes with the seat off and look for leaks, take it for a good 10 to 15 minute ride, while you are riding and close to the dock, shut it off and restart it to see how it starts when warm and in the water. For 2800.00 everything should work the way it’s supposed to, except the vts of course which is a bonus. These should and do come up running for 2000.00 with no trailer and that’s asking price, but if he will take 2800.00 and it’s perfect and it’s perfect for you, I say go for it. Don’t accept anything but perfect for this price, if the idle isn’t right, anything at all isn’t right, then it’s not worth the 2800.00 .

I appreciate this detailed reply man it sure helps. Honestly $2800 was the exact price I was thinking. I get the compression isn’t 150 but I’m willing to do a top end rebuild when needed. When I asked him the running condition he said it starts great but doesn’t like a long idle, says it will cause it to foul. But says it loves mid - full throttle. To me that seems odd and something simple as an idle screw adjustment ? Since you live in Canada I have to ask you … where is your go to site for ordering parts ? Seems limited for us and usually take a hit with the shipping costs.

I order almost all my stuff from OSD marine, it’s in the states, but I live in Iroquois Ontario which is about 15 minutes from Ogdensburg New York. I have a parcel service in Ogdensburg and pick up all my packages there. And there you go, doesn’t idle great!!! Pretty, he’s got balls asking 3800.00 and it doesn’t run perfectly. Nobody is going to pay 3800.00 for it, honestly 2500.00 is fair now, I mean really fair to him. That problem idling could be as simple as a low speed screw adjustment or it could be a leaking needle and seat, I’m not sure exactly on what symptom is from what issue or which faulty part in the carb causes the exact symptom but I would definitely guess that’s fuel/air related. Don’t pay that kind of money without a water test, make sure to kill it on the water, let it sit a minute or two and then restart. Also don’t take his word on the compression, take a tester that you know and trust. Doesn’t have to be expensive tester but one you trust, mines from Canadian tire,, cheap, but I trust it. No Amazon parts or eBay. Where abouts are you from?

Okay good to know. I will be sure to bring my tester and confirm his readings if I decide to go look at it. As well as confirm that I can water test it before even going. I’m from Winnipeg, Manitoba.
