I am the new owner of a 96 SPX. The last registration was in 08 so it’s been sitting for awhile. One plus, this is a one owner machine and has been garage kept its entire life. Of course I am dealing with oil in the case but wanted the pro’s here to tell me what you think of the rotary valve condition. Thanks in advance for any help!!

Circular marks mean you have some wear but it might not be much. Pictures are difficult to tell. Put a good straight edge over the surface of the valve cover and see if you can slip a .003" feeler gauge under it. The most significant wear is usually near the ports. See the attached picture. The problem with wear is if there is a passageway that crosses over from one port to the other which can make the ski difficult to start. You might not notice it though. Do a clearance check using .032" solder. Specs call for .010" to .014" I've had not issues with the clearance at .017".

Thanks @etemplet. Been a delay due to family emergency but i was able to slip a .003" feeler gauge under the straight edge in spots. I am going to get new valve and cover. Any recommendations where to buy a replacement?

Thanks!

I don't think .003" will kill ya but yours definitely has some wear. If you want to get a good used one stick with the used part guys on Ebay. Irby's, Redline, there are many others.
