Ok so I just picked up a 96 SPX and a trailer for 60o bucks. the ski itself is in good condition. I only bought the set to sell the jetski and make a couple bucks. I need a trailer for my 05 rxt. So When I picked up the ski there is no plugs. Its been sitting in upstate NY for almost two years. Wasnt taken out last summer but the summer before. Its just been sitting covered and im hoping water didnt get down in the plug holes. I just want to buy some plugs and see if it starts. so if anyone knows what size the plugs are that would be great. If the plugs dont get it to start i can return it with in the week to the owner and get my money back.feed back please!!!

Don't know the plug size off hand,, but I would get some spray into the cylinders to HELP lubricate the walls and what not.

Have you turned it over by hand yet?

Thank you to both of you. I have no idea about motors. so i dont know how to lubricate the cylinders or how to turn it over by hand. I dont wanna spend any money as i dont have any to fix it haha. if this lubricant cant be found in a house the best i have is wd-40 haha

WD-40 is fine as a lubricant goes for what you need it for. It is not a great penetrating oil so if the rings are stuck to the wall, WD-40 wont help much.

That said,,, if they are seized, little will help....

On the other hand, I would suggest looking closely at the trailer if you plan to drop your RXT on it after selling the spx, almost 2x the weight!

Thanks ill give it a shot. if its seized i have 6 days to bring it back for a full cash refund. haha. or what do you think i can get for it with a seized motor? im $600 into it can i at least get my money back?

Thanks for the concern. It is a bandit trailer. It almost looks identical to the trailer the ski is sitting on that the old owner let me take to get it home but have to bring him his trailer back. Is it bad the ski hangs off the back a good foot or two maybe even 3? ive just been ratchet strapping it.

I'm kind of concerned that you have rust on the inside of the motor. Moisture gets EVERYWHERE, even if the plugs are in, but ESPECIALLY if they're out. Has anyone ever brought a ski back from the dead by just spraying some lube into rusty cylinders and had good compression after that?

no you can't sell it for 600, not even close, but is you seriously can return it, then get working now... my guess is that you'll be taking it back

ps.. not so comfortable with a ski hanging off 2-3 feet, thats quite a bit... meebe your trailer is a tad small for a big ski

it happened once, in 2003, northern Kentucky, not to me but I read about it. :)

actually in all seriousness, you'd be amazed what motors can come back from, especially the 717's...

If the trailers gvwr was known them it is just a matter of checking the tires and bunk board condition...
As for overhang or position on trailer I have had to adjust the winch/front stop position to get the correct tongue weight when changing from a two stroke to a four or vise versa.

ya, my first thought was that it would pop a wheelie as soon as you disconnected it from the hitch.

Thanks everyone for the feed back. just walked up to the auto parts store about 3 miles from my house. bought some rust ion spray they told me to spray in spark plug holes to loosen up the cylinders. letting it soak in as we speak then going to try and put the plugs in and fire it up. if it starts great if not back to the owner i bought it from. good thing she was a friend of a friend so i know i can return it!!!:)

As for the trailer. thanks for the idea of moving the winch spot. and im going to have to adjust the bunks but im hoping all is well with the trailer. thats the only reason i bought the spx haha. so there is no way to get 600 bucks for a single place bandit trailer with a spx that doesnt run? the guy i bought my rxt from wants 425 for his single place trailer

So i just charged the battery and put the plugs in and nothing happens. Shouldnt it at least turn over or the gauges turn on or something? what can i try to do now?

So i put my battery from my rxt in the spx and she started right up. Bought a new battery just letting it charge up and it should be good to go. Just curious is it bad that it idles very high?

It will idle higher out of the water as there is no load on the impeller.

So if it is only a bit high, don't worry about it until you splash it.

You don't want to run it too long on just a hose as you will damage the drive shaft where it passes through the hull.

If you want/need to run it for more than a couple of minutes, fill the lower hull up with water to keep the seal cool.
