I ordered the rebuild kit and pulled the starter today. I was surprised to find water in the starter when i tipped it on its side. Seemed very dirty inside, compared to YouTube videos on how to rebuild starters. I began pulling it apart and found two of the magnets were dislodged from the housing... the starter is, what i assume, to be oem, but it looks like it might have been rebuilt before. I sprayed some wd40 on the spines area, which seemed to feel the gear up so it moves in and out now. Before, it seemed like it was frozen in the retracted position.

I’ll try to post pics. Is this beyond a rebuild? Should i order new starter instead of rebuilding this one? I have a 94 spi that “could” be a parts machine, should i pull the starter out of that and try it on the sp?

thank you in advance. Great forum, btw. Been lurking for a while and recently joined. Lots of great info on here.

I’m really not sure where to point you on this one... I know the cases can be repaired, but I’m not sure how they remount the magnets on them. I’d probably give Westside Powersports a call and see if maybe they have a bad starter they could cannibalize and give you the case from...
