96 seadoo XP problem

Hi guys, so I just purchased a 96 xp from a guy that is a mechanic on vehicles for the company i work for. The problem/symptoms its having (per him) is it will fire and tack up for 3 to 5 seconds and immediately shuts off and wont start back, if you walk away for 15 minutes and come back same thing it will run for 3 to 5 seconds. He said he has replace almost everything but the main computer, and from his research that's what he thinks it is. Now this guy races lawn mowers for a hobby and is some what of a small engine guru, so Its not like the information came from "Joe Blow" down the street. SO WHATS YALLS ADVICE OR HAS ANYONE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM? Any advice is much appreciated! Thanks

verify you are getting fire to the plugs first. Then start checking the fuel delivery system. Lots of great information on carb rebuilding and troubleshooting on the forum.

The guy compression checked it and it has 150 psi on both cylinders, he rebuilt the carbs fixed the fuel lines from the guy he got it from had them all jacked up, but they may be one crossed still I need to look up a diagram and check them. The mechanic seems to think it electrical.

I think what etemplet is asking, does it have spark after it shuts down. If it has spark but won't start, I would be looking into a fuel problem

Right, I haven't messed with it none I'm just going off what he said, but want to say he said it didn't after it shut off.

You can leave the spark tester connected while your run the ski and watch it. When the ski shuts down you'll be able to see whether there is spark or not. Then when you try to restart the ski after it shuts down you'll see if there is spark at that time. That will give you a decent course of action.

Yea that would be real handy, how does it hook up to the plug?

They go inline. You’ll pull the spark plug boot off and plug it on to the spark tester, then the spark tester has a boot that goes on the plug.

If you have spark, the next thing to check before you buy a computer would be to run a fuel line directly from the reserve nipple on the fuel baffle to the carb inlet, bypassing the fuel selector and filter. If it runs them, you’ve got a delivery problem. If not, you’re going to have to keep digging.

Lots to check before purchasing an MPEM, That'd by my last choice. Generally when the MPEM goes.... it's stays dead. :)

I normally stick it to the block the old fashioned way it would be handy to be able to check it running tho

So I talked to the guy some more this evening and from the way he explained it..... (cranks and runs for 3 to 5 seconds and shuts off no fire after that and 15 or so minutes later it will repeat that process.....) so I'm wondering if maybe the key is not programmed properly for the machine and the computer puts it in and anti theft mode. I dont know much about sea doo computers but has anyone delt with a key issue? does that sound feasible? It not a fuel issue per the mechanic. Like I said I trust his skills on small engincrabs. He also said he rebuilt the carbs.

do you have the ski in your possession right now? You haven't told us in your experience what it does after shut off.

Also I would go over and check everything twice just to confirm what he said was solid.

Does anyone know how to get the the pin connectors out of the connector clip? It looks like some green corrosion going on in some of the wire coming out of the MPEM box. I'd like to clean and degrease the pins and eliminate that problem .

Advance Auto , if you have one in your area has a tool as well but it does several types. I bought it because it was local. It got the job done.
