Hey everyone, I just purchased a 96 SeaDoo XP for a very cheap price. It had not run for 9 years. I like projects and wanted to take this on. First think I did was test the starter and replaced the starter solenoid. New battery, new plugs. Now I've read on here that I should lube the cylinders and try to manually turn the PTO with spark plugs removed. It turns about a quarter turn clockwise and twist back and forth but no further. My question is, what should I do next? It should be able to continually turn, right? Is it froze? Any tips would be appreciated.

You will need to do a lot more but yes, remove plugs and squirt a little fogging oil in there and see if she turns over. If so at the minimum you need to replace fuel lines, the small oil feed lines from the pump to the intake, clean fuel filter, replace fuel selector valve, dump gas tank and clean if needed, clean and rebuild carbs with genuine kits - $47 each.

Since I am wanting to get the cylinders lubed nicely, I am trying to manually turn the pto before cranking. Like i said.. a quarter turn is it. I removed the jet pumped (good god) and it is in pretty decent condition. Engine still stuck. I removed the cylinder head, and the pistons look surprisingly good. What am I missing? Could the starter be stuck engaging the flywheel?

Just press the start button and see of the starter cranks it. If so then lube it up.

Starter is spring loaded on the bendix, not likely, I'm thinking after 9 years sitting the crank bearings are dry and rusty. You need to get some oil in the bottom end to get it moving again. Personally, I'd pull it and go through it, that's a very long time to be sitting, all the seals on the crankshaft are probably dry rot and hard, and you'll probably be chasing air leaks even if you get it running in current form.

Thanks for the input guys. I like projects but a complete engine rebuild may be out of my league. Keep the suggestions coming!

If you chose to rebuild it plenty of guidance on here. If you can turn a wrench and read a service manual (download) it's not as bad you think, then ask for help when you need it.

How much do you think a full rebuild cost? Recommended place to purchase the parts? I think my biggest struggle would be lack of specific tools.
