96 Seadoo GTI 3 Seater and 95 Seadoo XP 720. Need answers/help. Dr Honda??

Hello,

I tried to pick up some used skis and outcome not so good

The first one is the 96 GTI 3 seater with the 717 dual carb setup for 500 bucks. I went in knowing it did not start but PO said he had bought it but never got around to putting in the starter and breaking down the carbs to clean them.

So I get it home and start breaking it down and what do you know I can't the flywheel to turn it over w/o the plugs in. I hear a clunk clunk :banghead:
I go to remove head and end up snapping two bolts. So I say "engine needs to come out" and there is where I'm at.

So the questions:

#1 The engine mounts are gone and need all four. Not sure if bottom plate bolted to hull needs to be replaced with rubber engine mount??
# 2 The engine tag says its 717 with twin carbs but can I get a 717 with single carb instead??
#3 Is there a way to test mpem?? Can I test in my 1800 Sportster w/o damaging anything in my boat? Thats the only other variable which will decide to keep or sell.

Thinking of either cutting my loses and put it back up for sale or getting new engine from sbt?

On to ski #2 a 95 xp

The engine has been replaced w/SBT. owner has it on pre mix which is fine with me.
Only thing gauges/vts are not working and safety landyard missing. Need new switch. Owner just touches wire for it to start right up
Good deal or bad. Going to pick up tomorrow??

Comes with no trailer for $550

So please any helpful replies appreciated....

Not really sure.
I bought a 95 SPX recently that was in great shape on a trailer for $1,000 2 weeks ago.
I see lots of running skis in my area for $1,200 - $1,500

If you have a trailer already it seems like a decent deal.

^thanks.

Any one know if I can drop a single carb 717 and still work. The original has the dual carb??

Also, is the xp a bad deal??

Sounds like the XP could be a good donor for you at that sort of price.
Put a "good" SBT motor from the 95XP into the 96GTI.
I have the same situation.
I am currently removing a "bad" motor from a 96GTI and will replace it with the motor from my "donor" 95XP where the switch, VTS and pump are all bad. Both have the dual carb 717s.
Jetting and pop-off vales are subtly different in the carbs.
I'll probably keep the XP carbs on the XP motor and see what happens.
I'm probably a week or so away from completion due to lack of time.

I thought of using the xp motor for the GTI but I'm still out one ski...
Thinking of putting gti on back burner or part out and pick up the xp for the price I figured its a good deal.
Just need trailer.

A few things first.

1) Don't bump your own thread if it has been less than 24 hours. Your first post was at 10 PM, and the next post was at 9am the next morning. SO... you were looking for an answer in 11 hr's when most people are sleeping.

when I'm looking at posts, and I have a short amount of time... I look for posts with no replys. So by bumping your post, I skipped over it.

2) Proof read your posts. The grammar makes it hard to know exactly what you are asking.

OK... with that out of the way... Let's answer the questions above.

#1) No... the engine cradle does not need to be replaced, but since you are replacing all 4 mounts, you will need to re-align the drive line.

#2) Yes. Single or twin carbs... it doesn't mater. the 720 engine is the same.

#3) There is no good way I can tell you to test the MPEM. If you hook something up wrong... you will kill it. The boat MPEM's are different, and the wires aren't going to match up.

Ski #2....

Like it was said above... $1200 will get you a nice running ski on a trailer. So, it's up to you if you want to buy a project.

As far as... "Is it a bad deal?" No... it's fine. I would buy it knowing that the engine is good. I can pull the engine, and sell it for $700 by itself.

#1 Okay so with ski#1 the GTI if i get a new 717 with single carb I'm straight. No need for dual carbs. I need to get correct RV for the timing? Also the engine mounts not the cradle where motor sits on needs replacing. The rubber piece is completly off. So when replacing engine mounts the plate attached to hull comes together with the rubber part. Its where the engine cradle sits and bolts to?

#2 the XP runs and starts fine. Only needs new safety switch but come with no trailer for $550.

in regards to price here in south Flordia nothing is that cheap running.... or its a gem in the rough.

Thanks again

edit: fixed it for you
