thanks in advance for everyones help. i just purchased this 96 gtx and it will spin over fine with the sparklers out but installed the starter engages with just a clunk and thats all that happens. i assume the exhaust is plugged but i am new to seadoo and thought i would ask the experts. btw with the plugs out you can put your fingers over the plug holes and it will quit spinning as if the plugs were installed lol. i look forward to hearing from all that respond and the new friendships to come. thanks again, Justin.

the battery is new and i did a voltage drop on the cables and they are fine. has anyone seen a starter be strong enough to turn over without plugs but not stong enough with the plugs in? im very experienced in auto repair and i have never seen a situation like this. either the starter will or wont turn over or it will at least spin a revolution or two, ive never seen one act like the motor is locked up...but there is always a first time for everything lol!!

i had the same thing just happen and i had my starter checked and it was like new. mine wasnt bolted up flush and it was binding. did you mess with the timing?

hey SRUSH! i just purchased it 2 days ago so the history is a little unknown. of course the previous owner said it ran great when it was parked but sometimes would go into like a fail safe mode like 60mph to 12 mph and he didnt know why. i havent done anything to it except put a new battery on it and attempt to start it. are most of the seadoo starters of that era the same? i also have a 94 gtx and a 95 spx at the shop i could borrow a starter off of if it will work. thanks again guys!

well everyone told me to check my connections on it first but if it cranks with the plugs out it can be timing. there is a brass gear on the rotary shaft that can strip out and throws the timing off.

looked at my manual and the housing looks diffrent on the mag so i dont think those others will fit. i took my starter to an alternator starter shot in town and they could rebuild it cheap and quick. they checked mine and told me it was like new for free. if its not that then its probably your timing. the brass gear probably stripped on the rotary shaft. they arent too expensive

where did you get your manual? i really dont know anything about the rotax motor, am i better off to pull the engine if the brass gear is stripped? it dosent look to hard to do. a manual would be nice though lol. we do have a starter shop just outside of town that could fix me up im sure and they are like the shop you went to, very reasonable and do work with you. i guess i will take the starter off then or maybe first see how many amps the starter is pulling and just go from there. what do you think?

Yeah then if thats not it the rotary valve is right under the carbs i timed mine in the hull just took the carbs off and 4 bolts hold the cover on the rotary valve id check the timing on it and see where it is before pulling the shaft to check the gear

I got the manual with the jet ski and the parts catalogue so i have part numbers, they sell the shop manual and it has all crafts from 92 to 96 in one book

my brother we are only 50 miles apart if im not mistaken lol. imin north west tn. i noticed where you were from earlier, it sure is a small world lol

well the starter tested bad so i will order a new one. i will post again to verify that it is fixed. thanks again everyone!!

Where do you go ride? I just moved here a few months ago I used to be by dale hollow now I dint really know anywhere around here

hi I have just joined as have the same problem, went to Sunderland airshow with boat and ski, switched it off, would not restart but turns with plugs out, towed it back tonight and am a mechanic myself, but like you it makes no sense, found your post and wondered what the end result was, may save me a lot of time on a wild goose chase,
Nigel Tye
