I bought Ski just for the trailer 200 dollar investment and it's been sitting in my yard for three months without trailer I'm short a ski while I'm rebuilding my 01 xp so last night I did a compression test I have 150 on each cylinder and decided to go ahead and get the carburetor cleaned and put it back on the ski to my surprise cranked up first hit ran great the only problem is it's running wide open at idle. I had my local motorcycle clean the carb so I set the low at 1.4 out and high at zero. I'm going to crank it back up and spray carb cleaner around base of carb and intake to look for a air leak? When I bought it pervious owner had removed carb with Intension of cleaning carb and never got around to it he said it was losing power

Did u change the fuel lines and fuel selector? The Grey tempo lines turn to goo, and clog the filter inside the carb. It will cause the ski to run lean.

There are three adjustment screws on the carburetor. (1) Idle stop screw. (2) Low Speed Idle screw. (3) High speed screw. The idle stop screw does just what the name implies and establishes base idle rpm by physically adjusting the throttle plate mechanism. The low speed idle screw does not raise or lower base RPM per se but rather smooth the idle and transition to high speed circuit. The high speed screw controls the upper RPM and is most critical because maladjustments can destroy your engine.

If your Sea doo is running WOT at start this is a mechanical issue with the throttle plates, throttle cable - linkage, or base idle screw. The low speed jet will not cause this issue. Please check that throttle plates are opening and closing freely. Base RPM is 3000 RPM out of the water & 1500 RPM in the water.

Wow I'm really showing my ignorance backed the idle screw off and fixed the problem runs like it supposed to now. so tomorrow I'm changing all fuel line and am going to look into the oil pump it was disconnected from the tank every thing is still here minus the cable from carb to oil pump running a premix until I figure it out ill post a pick tomorrow she's not in bad shape

I ordered oil pump cable today along with a few other small things. Changed all the fuel lines today and I got to see first hand the green goo. Fuel selector valve was almost completely clogged took a half a can of carb cleaner to get it all clear. I cleaned it up and it looks great. She does need a vinyl job done on the seat along with a fresh hood paint job. Need to get it in the water first just to check it out.image.jpgimage.jpg

I went out this morning and dropped her in the water. Runs great at idle and to about 1/4 throdle. She seemed to have a lot of power and very responsive punchy even. But as soon as you open up the throdle it was surging still gaining power but like it was starving for fuel. Pulled it out the water and came back home so I don't mess it up even more. I've been trying to read up and i see possible causes. My first mistake was cleaning carb and starting it up without replacing fuel lines first. Fuel lines are done now but I did run the ski for thirty mins or more with the gray fuel lines still on it. Alot of people are talking about a fuel filter in the carb. My question is is there one on this model 1994 gts with the 580 single carb. I set the low at 1.25 and the high at 0 would changing the high help with this?

I think every model has the internal fuel filter(s).

Also, the fuel selector is often bad due to the green goo issue. Bypass it to test and simply replace it for 20 bucks.

also, if its surging you may want to pressure test the fuel system. very quick and easy to do. go to seadoomanuals dot net and download the manual. itll give you all of your parameters for your ski, such as how much psi the fuel system should hold. should be 5 psi for 10 min but could be different from your model.

also, if you're surging and looking for an air leak, you should have a gasket under your carb where it meets the manifold. on older skis they deteriorate or fall off when taking carbs off and people don't notice or forget. that'll cause an air leak.

I ordered a pressure tester checked my pop off it was 29. Also pressure tested the fuel system but the tank is not full so I could not get it to five pounds but when I disconnected the pressure tester a lot off pressure came back out I think my fuel tank was expanding. While under pressure checked the fuel shut off it held five pounds. I'm going to get fuel today I'm also going to get a multimeter as I've been reading charging could be a issues it seem the next thing I should check. Also pulled carb and cleaned it fuel filter was not dirty at all. I've been doing a lot of reading on this site so I checked my wear ring and its destroyed so I pulled pump. Bearings seem fine including the carbon ring bearings. Impeller has some wear and scratches but not bent. I decided to run the engine with out drive shaft and the same thing is happening fells like a rev limiter is kicking in at 1/3 throttle.

Sorry my last post wasn't clear I did clean fuel filter in carb although it was very clean. Ill post after I pressure test the fuel system with a full tank and test charging with the multimeter. I think I'm still heading in the right direction?

So I got a multi meter battery reads 12.47 with jet ski off and at idle and picks up to 13.65 when it hits the rev limiter. There is not a rpm gauge but i think it's hitting about 3000 to 3500 rpms at its max really sounds like a rev limiter but I bought ten gallons of gas I'm going to test the fuel system again tonight

Fuel system held four pounds for ten minutes. I bought the small pump lol couple hundred pumps!
Not really sure where to go from here. I was talking to brian at the shop mentioned in the carb adjusting sticky (he rebuilt my carbs for my Xp that I'm getting ready to put back together) he mentioned a memp what do y'all think.

Ok the thread that reads 96 gti wide wot issue my ski is doing the exact same thing that you hear in the video on and off the water. I have removed pump to replace wear ring and the drive shaft and it still does the same thing it can't be getting past 3500 rpms

I have put the ski back together I found a blockage on the pilot jet on the carb and I replaced water separator/fuel filter due to striped threads. Not really sure which one fixed my problem but it has been fixed.
Also got the oil system put back together bled and it's working well. Also rebuilt pump and installed a new wear ring I did have to get another housing from nick due to inexperience on bearing removal.
On the second housing I used impller shaft placed in the pump with the threads held into the socket I used to press the bearings out this allowed the bearing to stay alliened and come right out. When I pressed the first housing the first bearing go mis alliened and chewed up my housing a twelve ton shop break had no mercy on my ignorance. i put it in the water today IN THE RAIN she ran great!!
