by the way the metal filings appear to be mostly a grey power like and a little bit of shinny flakes . kind of pasted inside the carbs center air flow area. so it cakes up from the fuel . kind of like mixing cement . in a much smaller degree. so its kind of telling me mostly aluminum and a much less amount of steel only about 15 small flakes all no good of coarse but.
and the gasket looked perfect its was just changed. the mating surfacing look pretty good also but of course ill have to make it smooth like new. is there any exhaust sealer I can add or just a new gasket. I thought I was going to be ready for the weekend we have a great airshow at jones beach .

If you are getting metal inside the carbs it has to be coming from the rotary valve wearing itself out bad. Are you sure it is metal flakes? There is nothing else that would cause that inside the carbs. Can you snap some pictures?

that would be good news maybe its left from last owner running. ill try to get a picture . if not ill press on with repairs the rotax didn't show much wear when I had the cover off to remove the pump gear. but it could be wearing on back side . . the water had to be going inside crank areas.

I am happy with 42 mph. Actually, I prefer to cruise at 30ish. My ski is on perfect plane like riding above the water. At 35, there is something wrong IMO. Should my ski break (well, it will break one day), I think I will go for a new 4 stroke GTI.

Benji.

this was my very first thought.was the rotax valve but the side I was able to see looked good. do people have problems with the rotary valve wearing ??? with the holiday that past all I did was remove exhaust bolts and look at the exhaust it wasn't to bad looking as far as condition. and didn't have much corrosion etc etc . before but I'm going to fix water leak first does the tuner pipe come out without loosening motor mounts. you ask for pictures I cleaned the spots with q tips I still have them ill try to take pictures or the issue maybe trying to load them up on this page.

I fixed the water leak and the ski ran much much better as far as power and the nose lifted out water I was going faster then last time and I didn't fined anymore metal. I still need to work the carbs going to remove them today..

ski is running great full throttle and at idle gps at 48mph, mid range still is flat and motor shakes a lot . at low rpm settings inturn losinging up the purple exhaust at the the exhaust manifold9which causes water leak into engine) as a slight fix I will drill holes into bolts and nut and safety wire them so they wont losen up. but I have a rough running engine and mid range is still not good I have to continusly slightly rev and let loose of throttle slightly to keep engine crip and engine will respond nicely..I need to still fix mid range . and does everones 717 engine shake at low power settings.????
I didn't want to loose the summer so I tuned the carbs and adjusted the high and lows to get it to run as good as possible with out properly rebuild carb with oen parts. pop test was good both at the proper and exact pressure . so my spring and arms are good. what left that can cause the rough engine shake and flat mid range. the diaphragm. can the timing be off? for now the engine is running good enough for the short summer I get. but at end of summer I will rebuild carbs again. I check after every run compression and the plugs they are now slightly brown on the ceramic and there is plenty of oil on plugs there not dry looking.

ps no more metal shavings !!!!!!!!
I DID GET ZAPPED STIKING MY ARM IN TO ADJUST CARBS MY ARM TOUCHED THE AREA WHERE THE SPARK PLUG WIRES WOULD GO TO GROUND . IM THINKING ONE OF THE WIRES THAT ARE TIED INTO THE BUNDLE THAT RUN NEXT TO SPARK PLUG WIRES HAS LOST INSULATION OR THE PLUG WIRE IT SELF THE MOTOR WAS SLIGHTLY WET AS MY ARE WAS BECAUSE IT WAS VERY WINDY ETC.

I CHANGED THE WORD as my ARE to my ARM !!!!

By the way thanks most for the help i found a bunch of small things which created an unhappy running ski.
Biggest exhuast bolts loose enough to allow water into engine. Was only abile to find it ti ed to trailer and dock and full throttle only then can see water coming out of muffler manifold gasket.

Spark shock the boot want all' the way touching wire so spark burned ho le thru boot .
Carb seals and old Gray fuel Lines.

The final was i didnt have the carb covers on when running for ease of tuning carbs.but let to much air in. Once engine was running near perfect. Slight bog still i installed covers back and ski is perfect runner hits 50 everytime. Thanks to most

And the covers completed the tune perfect air fuel mix Now . no more bogging. If i wanted to get a couple of mph i can rejet. And find a less restrittive air box and Im sure Ill gain some hp. Anyone know. Or bother. ?? Sometimes you can do a ton of small hop ups and gain less to much more the cheap things also yield. Ill see what others have done.

Airbox and jets won’t do anything to make a difference. It’s s 96’ GTI so just enjoy it for what it is. If you want more power get a different ski.
