96 GTI Bad DESS Post/Key??? - Fuel Gauge

I have two 96 GTI's. The problem that I have on one them is that it shuts off at random. Sometimes it runs fine all day and other times I can't even make it out of the cove before I'm having to re-insert the key on the post many times to get it to crank. It always starts up and runs fine, but it acts like someone removes the key from the post and just dies at random. Also, sometimes while I'm putting on and off the key on the post the guages work and sometimes they don't come on at all. From what I read, I suspect the post may be bad. Other times, even after removing the key from the post the gauges stay on or blink lights seemly at random.

My other question is for my other ski. I have replaced the fuel float in the baffle and one of my skis came back to life, but the other did not. In fact the gauge always has the gas light and battery light on. I am pretty sure the battery is fine as I've never had an issue with it. Could the gauge be bad or is there something else that could cause the fuel gauge not to work?

Thanks in advance for any advice, also please recommend any sources for the parts recommended to fix these issues that you can. Is it safe to buy parts off ebay?

First ski... yep... the post is going bad.

Ski 2... the gauge can be bad. The wiring can be bad... or you can have a real problem. Check the voltage at the battery, when the engine is running... and check the output of the fuel sender.
