Hi All, i put in a new 787 from SBT, and rebuilt the drive line + jetpump.

Finally fired the motor up this evening, she's runnin' good but I have several questions:

1) is the drive shaft supposed to get REALLY hot when running the motor out of the water, just the hose hooked up? It was hot to touch and burned my hand. I still dont have the plastic cover on it.

2) I am trying to check that the oil injection system is working by pulling the oil injector pump cable by hand and watching for extra smoke, but I'm not noticing much of a difference. I am running a quart of SBT breakin oil in the fuel tank, plus the regular oil tank with VROI. Not seeing any extra smoke when opening the pump, but its already kind of smoking due to the breakin oil in the fuel.

3) This is a newbie question, but I'd like to know how long is it safe to run the jetski out of the water with a hose and is it safe to periodically open the throttle?

Thanks all, its been a long week and many hours of work. I hope I can get some answers.

1) Nope, it shouldn't be hot. As said above, you should only be running on the hose for a few minutes at a time. other wise you will roast your new driveshaft seals. They need the lake water for cooling. Also, did you align your engine? Heat on the drive shaft could be a sign of a miss alignment. (that could break the shaft, or rip the splines from the PTO later)

2) Did you bleed the system after you re-installed the engine? Did you check to see if the nipples in the manifold, and the check valves were clear? Did you change the oil filter? If you did... then after 5~10 seconds you would have a smoke cloud (at idle) that would be thick enough to not be able to see though. Don't roast your new engine, make sure the system is working !!!

3) You can safely run it for a couple minutes at a time on the hose. Without the hose... 10 or 15 seconds tops. Unless you are trying to clear the exhaust of watter... there is no reason to rev the engine out of the water. Without a load on it... it can rev past the rev-limiter, and throw a rod. It's not a common thing... but on a new engine... don't take the chance.
