I have been dumping money into this 95 SPX and want to ask if anyone has taken the starter out of this machine without removing the exhaust?
from all I can see it is just the 2 bolts on the front left side of the motor and the holding bracket in the back below the exhaust along with the power and ground wire?
is this a bad idea to try?

It's a PITA, but it can be done. You're basically working blind and doing it all by feel.

just did mine yesterday in about an hour. try to shove a rag under the starter so when you drop a bolt, it doest go under the motor

Long extension bars are key. And patience lots of patience. Done it with a spanner turning 1/8 of a turn at a time took 4 hours. With long extension bars. 1 hour

Easier to cut a hole in the hull....just kidding.

I'm changing the starter in my I/O boat, laying on top the engine, reaching down and underneath the engine, working mostly by feel....2 lousy bolts that hold the starter to the block (I have the new starter).....now, how do you hold the starter in place and thread bolts in from the bottom up...with barely enough room for 1 hand to fit in there once the starter is in place......I'll figure it out ;)....everything is possible, just maybe not practical.

We endure!

Well this is possible and was not to bad to remove and install the new starter with out removing the exhaust.
It took about 1 hr and a extra set of hands for a minute while installing the new one but not bad.
took out and work great

There is a bracket on the back of the starter if you attach it loosely you can use a extension to start the bottom bolt first and then tighten those up before you get the bracket tight
