Been working on 98 SPX for a couple of days now.... Trying to get the carb bolts off (breaking them off). Does anyone know if NAPA can get the bolts out as I do not have a drill press (both carb and flame arrestor). Trying to drill these out with hand held, the bit wants to run.. Does anyone recommend a certain bit????? What a nightmare!!!

Got to the carbs and sprayed carb cleaner in carbs then starter locks up... Carb cleaner should not cause that should it??? Is it just a coincidence... Please help...

I use milwaukee black oxide drill bits for that kind of drilling.. just recently had to drill out a broken header flange bolt, so consider yourself lucky!! jk Idk how bad your situation is, probably a kind of tight squeeze huh? I doubt spraying carb cleaner into the carb would cause a starter to act up.

so i yanked my starter today, cleaned up the commutator & everything else, including hardware (pb blaster soak and wire brushed).. and also soaked gaskets in oil then reassembled/reinstalled, CRANKS LIKE A MOTHA!

problem now is fuel delivery.. which I won't lie, I saw this coming. Yanking all fuel lines tomorrow (original grey lines) and then cleaning carbs out...

can anyone suggest fuel lines to substitute? thanks for all your help ocod i owe you for not leaving me alone in my thread here.

So it was a starter problem? You could have bought a new one right?, unbelievable you can take it apart and reassamble! good news..

yep. Unfortunately this bilge has been subject to much moisture since about 2009. It's sad. The contacts and internal components of the starter were pretty funky.. I was able to clean everything up really well and reassemble.. thank the lord!

Quite honestly there isn't much to these starters. The important thing for anyone to do when disassembling a starter is to prepare a clean, flat surface to catch any parts that might come off when pulling apart. I went slow and for about 2 minutes I couldn't find one gasket but it was actually stuck to a rod so that straightened itself out.

The problem for me now is that fuel isn't getting into the engine and I don't wanna keep running this starter because eventually it will need a brush kit.. Minimization of usage is my goal but dam idk how to manage! lol

I will post back after a clean out of carburetor!

got the port side to fire up today ran really strong ... a little smokey at first but nothing to write home about.. really happy... I actually did a small toot of starter fluid to get the engine to fire and draw fuel it worked REALLY well.

however, jinxed myself about drilling things out.. busted a bolt in the exhaust manifold (holds exhaust to engine) .. on starboard engine now.. cleaning up starter and all contacts on that one tomorrow.. probably gonna get that going tomorrow... I hope!
