It’s just a basic shaded bar system with black vertical bars going from left to right. I think it’s just a LCD.

OK. That's what I needed to know. Just installed a used gauge and the lights work but the bars aren't shaded in. I have about 3 gallons of gas in the tank and my gauges isn't shaded at all but fuel light is on.

Do you still have the oem fuel float? If so the magnets that are attached to them fall off. The fuel float will still rise with the gas level but the magnets are what it reads to indicate the fuel level.

Theres several places to buy the replacement ones that are made of plastic and won't have this problem in the future. Even amazon sells them these days.

its either that or as 1of500 mentioned the polarizing film goes bad on the screen which renders the gauge unreadable even if everything is functioning perfectly.

Its possible to tear the gauge apart and replace the polarizing film, though it's a job that I have personally failed at and ended up just buying a new gauge

As far as I know, there is no sure-fire way to make sure it's the polarizing film.

If you still have the stock fuel float I would be willing to bet on it having lost its magnets though. I have a 95 GTX and that was the problem for mine.

I think the test function of the gauge is similar to the 96 in that if you just press the start key without putting the key on the post, all the bars and lights on that gauge will come on for a few seconds and then the gas gauge will show the level in the tank for about 30 seconds and then it will shut off. Do you at least getting the lights to come on by pressing the start button without the key on the post?

The red low fuel light is on while it's running. I haven't checked in the manner you just said but I'll do that this evening when I get home

It is hard to tell from your picture how dark the fuel bar area is, it does not appear cracked. If all your lights come on in the test mode, but no bars then try the following: Either use bright daylight or shine a bright light on the gauge and when you first hit the start button look for any small change in any area of the fuel display. It may only appear to be a dot that gets dark for a few seconds right after you hit the start button but if you see that then it is probably the polarizer on the LCD and can be replaced. Try it a number of times looking in different areas but wait for the other lights on the display to shut off (about 30 seconds) in between tries. That's how I convinced myself that mine was worth trying to fix. After I fixed my gauge, I found that the float on the fuel sender leaked and sunk to the bottom of the tank. After replacing the float everything was ok.

That's great! The next thing I would try is to add a few more gallons of fuel to your tank to see if it is just extremely low. If that doesn't work out follow NickCawks recommendations on checking the fuel float. If you find the magnet still attached it might be that the float absorbed enough gas where it will not float anymore. Test if it floats in gas, not water. It may float in water but sink in gas. Once you have the fuel sender out, you can attach the connector and should be able to manually move the float and observe changes on the display using the test mode. That should check out that the wiring is good.

Also, if none of that works out check the F1 fuse that Miki recommended. I don't know how easy it is to get to that on your model fuel sender.

I'll be pulling the fuel sender out this weekend so I can clean the leftover crud in the gas tank. Doesn't look too bad to get out.

depending on the level of dirtiness in the tank a little trick I saw someone do on youtube a few years ago I haven't had a chance to try but looks promising. Shove a few shop towels down in the tank and then spray into the tank with your air compressor. this will push the paper towels around the tank and does a decent job at picking up all the stuff.

Video Link - It seems to work pretty well for him and is fairly impressive how much he manages to get out that way. I'd love to hear how it went for someone else :D

So I’ve had 3 Sea-Doo’s that used that exact gauge and all three had a fuel saturated float. I was able to test the system by running the float up and down the tube with the sending unit out of the tank but plugged in.
