The parts diagram online shows the black side of check valve facing away from tank fitting so that air can get Out through the side of the hull. The manual says it should face the tank so air can get in. Which is it?

Are we talking oil tank or fuel tank? I don't think my oil tank vents overboard, like the fuel tank.

Doing this from memory, though...

The oil tank only has one check valve and should let air into the tank and does not have a hose on it.
The fuel has two check valves. One lets air out under pressure to the side of the hull and mouth pressure will not usually open it, I think it is 10 psi. The other one lets air into the tank and is the one that goes to the rubber grommet on the hood. This one you can blow one way.

Hmmmm that's strange, mine has another Grommet going out the right side just like the gas line going out the left and it was hooked to the valve from the top of the oil tank. My brother bought this ski new and nobody has ever messed with it. I can blow out through that hose but can't suck through it. I'll just leave the valve in the tank like you say, with no hose coming out. Wish I could post a pic but it won't let me for some reason. Ran into a new problem now... One of the nylon nuts on the nozzle is stripped somehow.

I have never seen the oil tank check valve connect to anything but the tank. It is to let air into the tank when the oil level goes down but not let oil out. I would not have it going out the hull because it could direct water into the tank. Is it possible that somebody connected the battery breather hose to the oil tank unknowingly?

I bet that is it! I did see a schematic that showed a vent hose for the battery and I couldn't figure out where it went. That had to be it! It vented out the right hull? It does reach the battery! You're genius. Thanks so much.
