I have a 94 Seadoo XP that wont turn over. It doesnt even click at the starter as if it were bad. I put in a new rectifier thinking it was bad because the symptoms of the ski lead me to believe it needed replacement. After changing it the ski would do what it used to which was sometimes crank and then not want to crank. When it did crank it cranked quick and started and immediatly shut off. It did that twice now I cant even get it to turn over.

Before I changed the rectifier it would do this random starting and not starting andit was also killing batteries, would run fine at some points then completely change its mine and miss and run like crap. Ive double checked all the wires in the electrical box, it has a new starter, starter solenoid, battery is new and charged. I even checked the switches and they seem to have no effect.

Any ideas of what else it could be?

sound like an ignition/mpem issue...
i was told if the doo keeps draining batteries, like it kills them right away, then theres a short somewhere in the electrical system...
i'm no expert, but i DO want to tell you to have it PROPERLY diagnosed before you go spending money on starters, solenoids, rectifiers, etc..b/c it can get expensive QUICK...
I had similar issues, and it would sometimes turn over, sometimes just click, or sometimes nothing...
Turned out the MPEM was the issue, and THANK god I had an extra one laying around, bc they can run you anywhere from $200 for a used/refurbed one, all the way to like $600 from the dealer... PLUS I was told that if your ski uses a certain D.E.S.S. ignition system, then you'd also have to get your lanyard programmed or something..

The best guy you wanna talk to for electrical/mpem issues is minnetonka4me he can either help you or point you in the right direction..

good luck, and report back with your findings..

Thanks i appreciate all the info. The mpem is one of the only things left to replace and i was hoping thats not what it is but we will see. I do have a 1994 GTX that is running fine, is that the same mpem??

NO
a 1994 XP has a 657X engine and four wire electronics system, and the 1994 GTX is a 657 - 5 wire electonics system. No compatability.
In engine or electricals.

Take the starter out, have it load tested, or simply take the rear off, you'll probly find bad brushes. A brush kit is like about $20.

With all your discription and what you have replaced...I am putting money on the MPEM is rotten. Put a spark tester on and watch it...it should just go out when it dies.

I have also had a wire come loose in the Mag housing causing all sorts of issues....if you havent opened up the mag housing and checked it...do it.

With the battery dying though...it prob the MPEM....or a major short somewhere.

Well today I messed more with the XP after my 97 SP broke down. Stupid plugs on the exhaust. oh well. Well We tried tapping the starter while trying to turn it over and it cranks when you tap it. We got it to start and it will stay running as long as the green start button is being held down. Once you let off, the ski cuts off.

NO. To close the circuit if you have to take front basket out, jumper the two wires (black/yel & black on the harness side after you unplug the connector. If you check continuity of the switch side it should be closed, and open when you press the stop button.

Have you done anything in the grey box?

You should go over your tracks in there, could be a loose ground post nut, loose wire, or you may have unplugged the lanyard, it enters in the cap-lid. These wires can be very confuseing and easily get mis-connected. Only way is to get a wire diagram, its in the Shop Manual and
gives each wire a color code. The lanyard, start, stop, control wires daisey-chain, as you will see.

i2,

The other day, my ski wouldn't start, but then i kept pressing the button HARD, and it finally started, but then wouldnt shut off until i pulled the lanyard...
luckily, i had a spare one at home, although it was used, and in almost as bad condition, you can actually hear/feel it click each time you depress it, and the other one just feels sticky/mooshy, but as soon as i put the new one in, fired right up with no problem...
And it was an EASY fix.
mine was REALLY worn away, and being a 1996, was probably the original button,
So I would recommend replacing yours anyway, even if its not the problem..
Good luck
