93 Battery Charging Issue

Hey,
1993 GTX. Just replaced the Rectifier as I thought that was the issue. You know, throw money at it until you have no more, right? Not being an electrical genius that is the easiest way sometimes.

Anyway, putting my volt meter across the battery, started it up. At idle it jumps from 0.xx to 12.xx volts. My meter reads 3-4 different readings each second. Anyone have any ideas how this system works and what I should check next? Not sure it's worth too much more fussing (money) as I get about 3-4 hours of riding with a freshly charged battery. Don't want to die in the middle of the lake, though.

Disconnect the rectifier and see if the numbers are consistent. I am sure it will be as there should no longer be input to the battery, just want to make sure. Other than a wire or fuse issue, it can only be the rectifier and or the stator. It sounds to me you have a defective rectifier. Did you buy an OEM or an aftermarket item.

The stator is testable as well.

Bought an aftermarket. $18 vs $100 was worth the chance for me.
I will try disconnecting it and see what I get. The readings on the new rectifier were the same as before changing it. So, I suspect something else but...could be wrong.

Do you know how or where I can find instructions to test (with only an Ohm meter) the stator continuity & output?

I think racerxxx knows the method.. I will search for it tomorrow morning.

I'd have to look in the manual for that one. I think some where around then they switched from a 4 wire stator to a 5 wire. I'll have to dig it up tomorrow. I'm doing with work right now as well as seadoo work. Multi tasking so I can hopefully stay home tomorrow, and do more seadoo work. Lol

I disconnected the rectifier entirely and the meter still jumps up and down, just the same. Must be the charging coil, no?

I would probably say no. If you think about it, the voltage is jumping with or without the regulator. The regulator regulates the power output keeping it from jumping--to make it a "steady" output that will ride and fall as the rpm's increase and decrease. I could be way off base, late night. But I assume you just disconnected the red wire? But if you disconnected all 4 wires then the voltage you're reading is just battery voltage since the charging coil isn't putting any voltage out and back into the system. If that is the case, you need to try a different meter

I tryed just the red wire off, then all 4 wires off. Same result. The meter is fine as I use it with everything else. Granted, it's a Harbor Freight meter but it's good enough to measure 12 Volts. It shows a steady 12.56 +/- when the engine is off. I am beginning to think I have a loose or broken wire that's shorting back and forth with the engine vibration.
