My 96 XP that I've had for 11 years appears to of seized and died on me the other day while getting it ready for a trip to the lake. I started it up, then turned on the water, after 5 or so seconds the motor started knocking, I did a couple of small throttle blips to see if it was rpm related. (It was) and on the third blip the motor made one loud knock and stopped cold.

The whole event from startup to lock was maybe 15-20 seconds. RPM was never above 2k. Prior to this I replaced the wear ring and had it out on the lake a couple weekends ago and didn't have any issues.

So far I have pulled the head and checked the oil lines for cracks. Oil lines look good and the pistons/cylinders look fine for 23 years of age. No pitting, no major carbon build up, a couple minor wear spots on the cylinder walls but nothing that looks terminal. I think the damage was done to the crankshaft, but I don't know how or why. I'd like to know before ordering a new short block...

Any advice you can give would be helpful!

The pump is a possibility, so definitely check it first. If it spins freely, then it’s either in the crank or the balance shaft. I just had a BS go on my 96XP a few weeks ago, and the top end had no signs of damage at all, but there’s a small crack in the back of the case on the balance shaft housing.

Well I pulled the pump last night and the impeller spins freely but the engine is still locked solid. ☹️

Thank you all. I've decided to wait to pull the engine out this fall. Would rather spend the rest of summer on the lake with the working ski. I'll update this once I get the engine pulled.
