787 in 951 hull

Hello all looking for some input on a project seeing if anyone has done something similar I have a 1997 gtx I picked up that has a rebuilt motor but caught fire back near the battery. The hull is somewhat melted and likely not worth repair, some wiring melted like the rear electrical box. But most stuff is fine. I have a 2000 gtx millennium edition hull that is good but had the 951 motor. The 1997 had the 787. I would like to swap the 787 in to make another running ski. Looks fairly strait forward just the front motor mount needs fabricated. Has anyone ever made one before ?

Haha, well I can make a working machine with what I have for really cheap so figured why not. I never got the 951 motor with the other hull so just rebuilding that isn’t an option. As far as the drive shaft and pump I’m just going to use the one off the 2000 hull. As I believe they are different in size. But the hull came with the entire assembly. Driveshafts are the same length I think. Haven’t gotten quite there yet. The exhaust will be the only other hurdle. The water box is on the opposite side so I’m just gonna run a rubber hose from one side to the other and should be good I think. Once the motor is in I will have a much better idea.

For anyone following so far swap is going well. Motor is in not a lot left to do. Got the exhaust figured out tonight.

Had my first test run last weekend and went fairly well few issues but think I have them all figured out now. So the swap was actually really easy if you have all the parts from the 787 motor. Only things you need is a front motor mount and the exhaust.

Just saw this. Looking good. The 787 is a pretty snappy engine as there are single engine boats out there with a 787. So in my opinion I don't feel as you will feel too much power loss.
Let us know how it runs and handles as compared to 951.

I prefer th 787 Engines but that 951 has some GRUNT and way more UMPH up top. I keep saying I'm gonna keep one of the 951 GTXs I restore but my wife and I like the 787s. perfect ski. Much easier to work on as well. :) i don't think You'll be disappointed. Good Luck !!

I never did have the 951 so not sure how it compares haha. I also have a gsx with the 787 and is more than fast enough for me. I got the gtx out again this weekend, went well for a while but something in the jet pump must have let go. I knew I should have done the bearings when it was apart lol. So need to look at that. Also I can’t get it to rev any higher then 5000 rpm on the water. It will rev out on the trailer though. Read some stuff about the race valves possibly not having slots on the bottom? Going to investigate this but wondering if anyone has any other input. Here is the machine all put together. I have since buffed it to bring some shine back.
