Am thinking of buying a used Sea Doo Jet boat. Does anyone know what year that Sea Doo went to a 4 cycle motor in their jet boats? I just think that 4 cycle is cleaner and more reliable. What do you think?

SeaDoo began using the 4 Stroke 4-Tec engine in the boat line-up in 2003 with the 15 foot Sportster 4-Tec. Then in 2004 they brought out the 20 foot Speedster 200 with twin 4-Tecs. Currently all SeaDoo units have phased out the Mercury and Rotax 2 strokes, and use nothing but the Rotax 4-Tecs.

My 2004 Speedster 200 twin 4-Tec now has 400 hours on the engines and I have had no engine problems. Maintenance has been annual oil and oil filter changes, and one recent spark plug change. I'd say that is pretty reliable.

A big plus for 4 stroke is you don't choke on the exhaust fumes like on a 2 stroke. That is important for watersports activity.

Thanks

Thanks, GregZ for the informative reply. I'll be on the hunt for at least a 2003 with the 4-TEC motor. I'ld like to stay in the 15' range. Do the twin engine ones handle better at idle than the single engine? My buddy's 1995 single engine Sugar Sand handles great, but will smoke you out because it's a 2 stroke. Thanks again.
