2003 XP DI won't take throttle

Hi All, Per the title of this thread I have a 2003 XP DI with a completely rebuilt motor from the crank up which will not take any throttle when the engine is under load in the water. I get the standard double beep and it starts and idles just fine. When I apply the throttle it hesitates and then dies. I do not get any maintenance required message or flashing red light in the info center display. This ski was water flooded when I bought it and sat that way for several years which is why I completely rebuilt the motor. It has very low hours so I do not suspect the fuel pump. I actually bought this ski as a pair of identical 2003 XP DI's and the other one runs great. During the rebuilt process I often referred to the other good ski for reference to make sure I had everything correct. I have cleaned and tested both fuel injectors but not the air injectors other than applying power and hearing them click. Since there are several sensors on the engine I am wondering if one of them is bad and is signaling the ECM to shut it down. It has a new battery and I replaced the voltage regulator. I also replaced the safety switch which was bad and was kicking in the cut-off relay as soon as the battery was connected instead of when the lanyard is connected. I hate to drag this ski to the Seadoo dealer and am hoping to figure this out on my own to save the time and money. Any suggestions or experiences with this type of problem would be greatly appreciated!
 
You have to test fuel pressure. It will not trigger a maintenance warning and has to be exactly 107psi or the ski will not run.
 
No code equals a fuel problem. Codes are electrical.
As Mikey said check your fuel pressure.
If I had to guess it is probably the filters on the fuel pump clogged. I would pull the pump and replace them. While you are at it I would replace the canister filter as well.
Internal fuel filters can be purchased at any auto parts store.

Many thanks to both reply's! After doing some research online and in the shop manual a new OEM fuel pump assembly is a ridiculous $950! However I see replacement kits from Quantum, Venom, and WSM in the $70 to $100 range. The Quantum unit comes with the fuel canister for $110 and indicates "Seadoo Forum Approved". The Seadoo pressure gauge (P/N's 529-035-709 and 529-035-710) does not seem to be easily located but thinking for the ~$100 investment I am better off just purchasing the fuel pump kit. Seems best to start with pulling the fuel pump module and checking the filters first. I don't see a P/N for just the filter canister and again thinking to purchase the Quantum kit which comes with the canister and be done with it. Any further comments are greatly appreciated as well as advice on which fuel pump replacement kit to purchase...
 
No, no and no. Almost all of the aftermarket pumps are junk and there are very few success stories with them.

THe issue is the DI pump is a very low amp draw pump and all the aftermarket ones pull too many amps and brown out the MPEM computer. I have honestly only seen one or two success stories here with the AM pumps and lots of failures.

If your pump is still working take it out and run it on the bench on a 50/50 mixture of fresh gas and toluene. Many have recovered bad pumps this way. Then replace all the fuel filters. If nothing else it is a maintenance item you should be doing even if it isn't your actual problem and you will only be out a few bucks in filters.

The last SD pump purchased lasted about 15? hours. SD refused to warranty the $900 pump because it was more than 90 days old. We have had NO issues with aftermarket pumps. Good luck!

I’m always going to recommend OEM. With that being said, I have never purchased a new OEM pump. I have always purchased used and when I receive it do major maintenance and cleaning on them before use. OEM pumps can last indefinitely with regular maintenance.

I had a fuel pump issue and went with the quantum pump. They sent 3 pumps over about a month that did not work. I started to think there was a different problem until a bought a used OEM pump. I installed and it fired right up. I've found the aftermarket pump people very accommodating, but their pumps won't produce the right pressure to run a DI.
 
I pulled out the fuel pump assembly and it was a mess. As suspected by folks replying to this thread, the filters were totally clogged. This ski had been water flooded and sat for several years and thus there was surface rust on the fuel pump itself and all kinds of nasty stuff in the assembly. I can't believe the engine even idled! I cleaned out the rest of the crud in the fuel tank and have the strainer and filter on order with NAPA so many thanks for the Airtex P/N's. Turns out Airtex is out of business but NAPA was able to cross the P/N's. As soon as I can find a place that sells toluene, I will run the 50/50 mixture with gas on the bench as suggested. Again thanks for the help which saved me a pile of money from the Seadoo dealer! One final question: Does anyone have a P/N or suggestion on where to get the canister filter? I want to go ahead and replace it as well. I found one from Quantum but is has nipples on both ends which would require cutting the hose and using clamps. The original canister appears to be threaded and I would like to preserve the hoses as they are now. Thanks in advance!
 
I do have another question. There appears to be a check valve at the base of the aluminum housing where the fuel pump and strainer go. Any suggestions on how it should operate or be cleaned?

I have used the generic filter with clamps without any problems.
