Hey all,
All of a sudden my 2003 sportster started running poorly this season and I have isolated the problem to water in the oil. My understanding is that this can be caused by an issue with either of the cooling systems. In my case, the closed loop appears to be fine with no significant loss of coolant when running the engine for extended periods of time or during long durations where the boat is sitting.
With that being said, I began disassembling the open loop system thinking I had a cracked exhaust manifold. After inspecting both the exhaust manifold for cracks and exhaust pipe for leaks in the jacket, both of those seem to be fine. I have performed about 5 oil changes thus far, but every time I hook up the hose or put it in the water and run the engine for a few minutes my oil appears to be just as milky as it was during the previous changes.
At this point it's unclear to me how the water is continuing to mix with oil. My only thought is that I didn't have enough pressure on the exhaust manifold/pipe when testing for leaks. Any advice or recommendations on how to proceed with the diagnostic would be greatly appreciated.
