Hi everybody just purchased first jet ski. I bought it from craigs list saying it needed a headgasket. the repair guy works on yamaha skis. The customer was out and the overheat light came on he shut it off and had it towed to the dock. One of the exhaust pipes cracked. He took it to this guys shop he repaired the pipe and started the ski up with water by the pump. After 5 min the over heat light came back on and he shut it off. He thinks it needs a head gasket. I was reading that when you hook it up to the hose it only cools of the exhaust and not the cloosed loop stytem. I dont think this guy knows what he is talking about. Im going to do a comp test and pressure test the cooling system to see if he was right. It would be cool if he was wrong and i put it in the water and see if it overheats. The oil is clean with no mud in it and the coolant looks very clean. Any help would be great with my problem,oh by the way ski is a 2003 gtx supercharged with 158 hrs on it

I agree with you. I don't think he knows what he is talking about. The biggest reason for overheat on the older 4tecs is due to the 3 holes on the j-pipe becoming clogged.

You're on the right track, test cooling system pressure, check oil condition. Then unplug the temp sensor on the exhaust and recheck but be careful, it will still overheat, it just won't tell you.

There are two temp sensors, one at back top of engine, and one on the neck of the exhaust above the water box.
