Have a 2002 utopia 240hp. Wont let me shift into nuetral after full throttle without shutting engine off. Should the reverse bucket have play? 1st time this has happened.

Has to be mechanical. Does it behave this way even if the engine is off? In other words, if you run the lever all the way forward with the engine off does it behave the same as when the engine is running?

If not (if it works fine when the engine is off), I'd look for interference or loose components back at the thrust reverser. There have been a few instances where the thrust reverser or its cable gets misaligned/damaged and when the engine is running the thrust forces the reverser into a physical position where it cannot drop. Since you have a single lever console (correct?), a problem like that would also prevent you from throttling down the engine. (My C2K has separate throttle and FNR levers so I can still control the engine even if something goes wrong with the thrust reverser.)

If the problem is there regardless of what the engine is doing, I'd lift the throttle/FNR lever assembly and watch carefully while you run it through its range of operation.

Report back!

It does work fine when the engine is off, also at slower speeds. When I try to throttle down and go to nuetral I can't puul the throttle lever to center and also I can feel the lever trying to surge forward as if the thrust is pushing the reverse gate up. It started after I hit a bigger wave and tried to stop. Should there be any play in the reverse gate or should it be tight? You are correct about the single lever control. Thanks, Rick

I think you tweaked something back at the thrust reverser. See if there is undue play in the pivots, cable linkage, etc. back there. Also confirm that the thrust reverser is adjusted properly with respect to the lever. I have dual levers so haven't worked on your system specifically, but there has to be some prescribed relationship between the lever position and when the thrust reverser begins to move downward. For example, starting to drop the thrust reverser down before it comes off of WOT would obviously be incorrect. There will be some sort of proper phasing there and I bet it's out of alignment.

The engine/jetdrive manual will not help you here because the phasing is controlled by the lever. The engine considers the throttle and FNR operations to be entirely separate. You may need to find your BOAT's (not engine's) service manual and see how it describes this should be adjusted. I do not know if your boat's manual is available from this site.

You're making progress. It's pretty clear what is happening. First step is to examine the parts back there, checking for loose/damaged pivots, damaged cables or attachments, etc.

I think I found the problem. I took the controller out. The pin that holds the circlip that holds the shift cable to the controller is bad. Looks like the top of the pin that is on the circlip side broke off, circlip's gone I imagine when it was under pressure from the throttle it must have bound up and wouldn't let me go to nuetral. Now the hard part is finding the part. All the parts breakdown pic's don't show that side of the controller. thanks again, Rick

Hey Rick, I changed the title on your thread to something slightly more appropriate.
