Do throttle bodies go bad on RFIs? I am getting a variation in RPM with steady throttle position. RPM drops off then picks back up. I am getting 60 pounds of fuel pressure. I had the injectors serviced and replaced the fuel filters. Engine is revving up to 6800+ RPM. I guess it is time for me to go deep on these. :) Help is appreciated.

I printed out about 20 pages on the RFI. I'm gonna know all about these bad boys in the next week. :D

If anyone has experience with these I'd like to know of the system is suppose to hold fuel pressure after the key is inserted. I"m getting 60 pounds but it bleeds off pretty quick.

The pressure shud not bleed off quickly, it shud hold its pressure for quite a while, I don't have (the amount of time ) specs, but someone on here will have it.

I just had the injectors serviced but I'm gonna check them and see if either of them are leaking. Pressure is going down pretty quick less than a minute to get from 60 to 20 pounds. Is there a check valve in the fuel pump?

I looked in the manual but nothing jumped out at me for a time frame but the injector leakage test says no more than a drop per minute. I gotta figure the injectors are good but I'll test them. Might be the fuel pump.

I’m not sure on an RF I but on a DI there is a foot valve on the bottom of the pump. In the picture are the washers associated with the foot valveIMG_8482.JPG

Thanks for the pictures. I remember putting that together so it's in there and it is good. If that valve is working that might mean the regulator or newly serviced injectors are leaking. Pressure drops really really quick.

It’s been a little while but I believe there’s two washers in there and I’m pretty sure not 100% but the red washer should be on the very bottom. That would cause loss of fuel pressure when inserting the Key, but I kind of doubt it would cause variation of rpm.

I am quite certain, and I could be wrong, that in the DI pump, there is a built in check valve in the pump,

You are correct and mine is assembled that way. I have a video of the fuel pressure dropping I'll see if I can figure a way to post it. It isn't a big deal to see it but a picture is worth a couple of words. LOL

Unless you have fuel leaks at the injector, I would guess, that your pump is failing, or, the fuel pressure regulator is failing, and I have no experience with them, where the fuel pressure regulator is, Apologies.

I saw some videos on Youtube. The pressure bled off on the tests I've seen. I will do more research. Appreciate the comments and help. I have more RFIs and DIs the carbed skis at the moment. LOL I'm gonna get good at these out of necessity.

Does anyone have a source to purchase a fuel regulator for the RFI? I can't find a part number. I think I'd like to replace the regulator and see what happens. One guy told me his fuel pressure holds for an hour. I'm researching. LOL

I took a shot on ebay and purchased a new "Fuel Regulator" only. I could swap out the whole fuel pump module but that wouldn't gain me any experience with this contraption. :) Since I replaced the filters and the pump pressure reaches 60 psi as soon as I insert the key I'm going with the regulator leaking back fuel into the system. That little rubber at the bottom isn't meant to be a valve that holds 60 psi... it is there to keep the suction line charged with fuel. The pump either works or it doesn't. This one works. :) We'll see what a less than $50 Fuel Regulator does.

I am hoping to eliminate the what we call "hunting" in the south. Engine seems to be looking for the right RPM. It's not really bad but the variation is a symptom that something is not correct. What I expect to see will be 1.) Quicker start up. 2.) steady/linear engine RPM and of course when I do the fuel pressure test again 3.) No decrease in fuel pressure when the pump shuts down. I have read that these systems hold pressure for an hour. My test will prove if that is true or not. :)

Fuel regulator came in today. Now I know how to remove and replace these. LOL I had to pull the unit because the regulator would not come off. O-rings were stuck. Regulator only put out 50 psi. It held pressure much better and the ski idled smoother. Since the o-rings were ugly I decided to replace the o-rings on the old unit and give it a shot. The regulator held pressure better with the new o-rings when the fuel pump was off but it wasn't consistent. At times it would hold 40psi sometimes I would drop to 20psi. Anyway... pressure was breaking up and I watched it affect engine performance. I'm gonna get a better regulator and give it another shot. :)

I opted to remove the fuel pump module off a 2003 GTI and see what happens to the GTX. I'll do the switch tomorrow AFTER I replace the fuel filters. I am also contacting the vendor on Ebay concerning the aftermarket fuel regulator.

Oh, I'm having a ball with this ski. LOL Tweakin Tweakin and more Tweakin and I"m getting real good at taking in apart. :D It keeps getting better and better though. I replaced the fuel module with a different one. Fuel pressure is on the low side but passable. BUT I'm getting very little leakage when the pump shuts off. I am thinking as this unit that has been sitting a while gets back in shape it will do one of two things.... get better or get worse. LOL I'm ready to put this girhl on the water again.

I sure wish we could source a good fuel regulator.
