Last time out riding I idled up a long cove, looking for a friend who was supposed to meet me. The machine putted along just fine for the 4 or 5 minutes it took heading into the cove at no-wake speed, but I noticed that when I gave it much of any throttle, it would kind of bog and try to die. After meeting with my friend, I headed back OUT the cove and noticed the same thing. I literally had to put it in "neutral" and hammer the gas a couple of times on the way out to 'clear its throat', so to speak. Out on the lake it ran like a raped ape. It WAS about 100 degrees that day...but what else should I be looking for?

OK....

If it was "Loading up"... when you grab a hand full of throttle... it would pop, and choke, and cough.... but it would eventually catch, and "Clear out".

What you are describing is a dry carb. Basically... at idle, the carb(s) are emptying, and there's simply no fuel to burn. (that's why it wants to die)

I would pull the carbs apart and make sure the high-speed check valve is clean and flat. (so it can seal) And also verify that ALL the bypass ports are open.

The other thing to check is that both cyl's are still firing. SO... go out on that long idle again, but shut off the engine, and pop the seat off. Then carefully touch the spark plug bases. They should be hot. But if one is cold... it's not firing. (that's going to lead you to the problem'ed carbs)

Oh... one other thought....

If you have a small exhaust leak... the same thing can happen. While moving slow... you aren't getting enough fresh air into the bilge, and it will try to die. SO... check for that too.
