I have a 2000 GTX DI that has been laid up for about 2 years waiting to put in a new stator and starter drive. I just finished the job and when trying to start it it runs rough/smokey for a few seconds then dies. 2 years ago when I stored it I treated the fuel and fogged the engine the best I could without the starter working (turned by hand) I drained all the gas and put new premium fuel in it before I tried to start it. Where do you think I should start with this first? I think some untreated fuel could have been in the injection system and gummed it up maybe.....Thanks

Check the Air & Fuel pressure, described how-to in your shop manual. Spark - Fuel - Compression.

I have the same ski with much the same problem exactly. Mine's sat for over a year with bust crank,.. now all rebuilt but won't run as I expected. Difficult to keep it running on both cylinders, smoking a bit (possibly with the excess oil used for rebuild)
I tested fuel pump pressure,... regulator on top of tank was faulty. Checked both sets of injectors,.. one was sticky,.. now all been cleaned in ulrtasonic bath.
Still it won't run properly,... took off the pipe from the air compressor,.. very little air being pumped out,.. but lots of back-pressure from the fuel rail. Took compressor apart,.. cleaned the vanes inside,.. pushes out more air but still not enough in my opinion to fire up on both cylinders.
Does your ski start initially on two cylinders for a few seconds then die back onto one cylinder ??
Mines will occasionally fire up well and 'sing' for a few seconds but then just bogs down.
I'm thinking this air compressor may need new rings ??
Very temparamental these GTX Di's !!
Hope you will post any problems you have solved so I can try it on mines..
Good luck

Same results this weekend, It would start up and run for 5-30 seconds, dies rough and maybe backfires out if you try to give it any throttle I replace the fuel filter (the one on there was original, the new one is 2x the size) put a new battery in, also I was getting no beeps when the DSS was put on and found the be a faulty buzzer. I don't know how to test the MPEM but the gauges come on to specs. I picked up a pressure tester and will test the fuel and the air this week. If nothing else I will bring it to the dealer later this week to do a $80 diagnostic. I'm lucky it's only 10 miles away. This ski was running fine when I put it away 2 years ago with just the low voltage problem so I think it might be fuel related. I put new fuel in the tank but I think the stuff left in the pump a and rail may have gone bad and gummed it up........next

I'll be watching your postings for sure when you find your answer. Mine's went to the dealers and no faults came up on the diagnostic machine. Still won't run. Very similar to yours,.. too much pumping the throttle to try to get it to rev up only gets back-fires too. I was having to squirt carb cleaner into the plug holes to get mines to fire again when it bogged down and stopped each time. Only ran for like you say 5-30 seconds,.. (the tail end was in the river )
I've laid mines to the side for a few weeks till I get the notion again to look at it. I'm going to check the throttle position sensors to see if they have gunked up, check the air going to the rave valves from the compressor to see if there is enough to open them up when the engine revs up, and I'll be taking out the reed valves to see if they are seating in okay.
Bye the way,.. I took off the injectors and pressure valves from the fuel rail and had to clean out some white-ish looking gunk that was sitting in the bottom,... but it still won't go !!

Good luck.

It feels like this is a timing issue with mine becuse of the occasional backfires. One thig I was concerned with was that the manual calls for a small black ground wire to be connected to the mag housing cover. I found the spot for it but my small ground was attached to the block back by the starter (It won't really reach). I wonder if that could be the cause since the mag cover is insulated from the block by an o-ring and paint and the stator and the encoder sensor is attached to the cover........hmmmmm

If it helps you to know that mines also has the black 'earth' wire bolted to the casing at the right hand side of the starter. Won't the mag housing be earthed through the bolts that hold it in place ???
Come the weekend I will have mines taken to bits and severely looked at !!

Yes they should be grounded by the bolts but they may not because of the paint/loctite and o-ring. I'm going to run another wire from by the starter to that area. Checked the fuel pressure and it comes up with 75lbs with just the lanyard connected (was that your prob?) may be the reg but the chart says if the pressure is up it may be a clogged rail. Took off the fuel rail to test it now and clean it....need to steal some more time to work...thanks

The fuel pressure from the pump must be around 107 psi,... my pump was okay but the regulator that sits on top of the pump housing ( with the flow and return high pressure pipes attached) was siezed and rusted. Its been replaced and has well enough pressure to feed the fuel system. Its the iar pressure that I need to look at next. I think I'm right in thinking that if the compressor is not pumping enough air to atomise the fuel in the rail,.. it won't be giving enough air to lift the rave valves either,.. which I think is causing some of the bogging noises...
Keep me informed and I will likewise after the weekend,..
Jonny

Were you able to replace the fuel reg by itself? Is there a part number for this. The dealer says he can only get the whole assy

Yes,.. the regulator sits on top of the fuel pump assembly on the OUTSIDE of the tank. If you look at it , there is a big square clip looping over the top of it (next to the fuel pipes) which pulls off and the regulator just pulls out leaving the pump assembly un-touched. The fuel pipes are attached to this , so they can be laid to the side too. It was a simple job,.. but make sure yours is faulty first before you dismantle it. Mines was heavily corroded and must have been stuck as the pressure was way too high. All this was done at the jetski centre while I was looking on.
