2000 gti wont run

I have a 2000 GTI. Was running fine then quit. The fuel gauge is broke but there is fuel in it. I turned the fuel reserve on thinking it may have run out of fuel it ran fine until I got home (it has fuel). Now the thing will not run. The fuel is fresh and the oil is fine. Does not appear to have anything in the water intake. I'm thinking either fuel or electrical. Are there common problems with the 2000 GTI doing this? Any help would be appreciated in troubleshooting the problem. What should I check first, second ... Thanks
