So I am looking at a 2000 GSX RFI jet ski. What concerns should I have with the RFI? I had a 97 GSX carb and loved it and rebuilt the carbs and did all my own maintenance. I have never worked with RFI before so I am a little worry. What problems should I be prepared for?

I like the RFI better than the carb models. Once you fix the fuel system is stays fixed. No adjusting or tuning, removing the carbs, trying to clear transition issues or wondering if it carbs or rave valves..... LOL but All skis are great when they are working properly. Fuel injection is also less sucepitble to issues if the skis sits a while without running. Put the key in and BAM you got fuel where it needs to go. Also Less trouble with NON mechanical people starting the ski. Simple electronic system and you get all the performance every time. I struggle with my carb skis to get that extra 100 -150 RPM. RFI's.... freakin 6900 or 6930 every dang time and the rave valve transition is so smooth. :D That said... I have 2 carb GTXs for my wife and I. I start it for her every freakin moring before we ride and she is pretty good with mechanical things.

If you buy one, I'd suggest doing the fuel system immediately. Send the injectors off for cleaning and testing, pull the fuel module and replace the filters. test/check the fuel pressure and if it is intolerance... the ski will be happy and so will you. LOL Good Luck !!

I am a little concern now after e-mail the guy last night. I asked about if he had done a compression test and he said no. He said he put a battery in the jetski last night to start it but thinks the starter is bad and will not turn over. Maybe motor locked up? What is the easiest way to check the motor, would it be taking the jet pump off and seeing if you can turn the prop by hand? I am concern about not being able to do a compression test on the motor. I do have a scope that I could put down inside the heads to see what the piston walls look like and the top of the pistons. Thoughts?

Run away !! If you buy a RFI, it needs to turn over. That will prove the electronics are working and you can do a compression test. Otherwise you'll be doing a lot of troubleshooting to find the problem and you'll quickly get into big $$. If you can't put the key in and get your two beeps and the engine turn over... you could be in for a long haul including buy a computer. You want the electronics to be SPOT ON if possible.

If you can't turn the engine over, most times it is not the jet pump.

Here is a picture of a 2000 RX the guy had the head off and sprayed some penetrant into the cylinders. Said, "I just rode this ski last year and it ran great. I should be easy to free up." Beware. :D :D Don't worry, I got the skis for a good price. Good thing. LOL
