I have a 2000 RX with the 951 that is not running right. I think it is loading up on gas. Also doesn't idle very well. I think the carbs may need to be rebuilt. Can they be removed without taking of the exhaust pipe? It looks like they may hit the pipe.

To be sure I understand correctly, you are saying, yes the carbs can be removed without removing the exhaust pipe. Believe me I do not want to mess with the pipe if I don't have to!!

Yes, you can but it isn't fun.

In order to take the pipe off it is actually easier to take the carbs off first.
So I pull the carbs off without messing with the pipe.

The bottom bolts on the carbs are the biggest pain in the azz to get out. I cut an allen wrench guessing about 2-1/2" long. Then I put it on a socket with some tape so it doesn't fall off. I can use my air ratchet to remove the bolts then but still.... it's difficult.

When you pull the airbox... be very very very careful NOT to put pressure on the carbs while removing it. Not positive but RX but I may have removed the air vent in the back and the battery. There is just not a lot of room. Pull the O-Rings off the mounting plate or the carb bolts won't come out.

When you go back with the carbs... put all the cables and everything on BEFORE you mount the carbs. I just rebuilt a set on the 951 and the exhaust and exhaust manifold are not on the engine yet... I still cursed them bastages... LOL.

Good Luck... :D

I have one of those to do also. I think its a 1999 XPL Carb? How is it to work on/install the engine and such? That engine in the front makes me not want to do it. LOL I'll be interested in knowing how the ski handles and if you like it compared to others.

Shoot me a PM. I'd like to talk to you about it.

Here's some tools that will make your life easier when doing the carbs. Short and long hex drives for the mounting bolts, various length extensions, and a hook tool for working the fuel lines loose (especially the return line because it has an easy-to-break plastic nipple)

The long allen tools are a must,,,I also have a short stubby 3/8 ths wrench that also also comes in handy,,,always remove your ground at the battery,,,and I like to lay a towel on the bottom of the hull to lay the csrb on while I am removing the hoses,,,inline, return, pulse, and the choke cable,,,don't forget to install the choke cable before you reinstall the carb,,,and also make sure a base gasket has not fallen off,,,if yes,,,I put a couple dabs of crazy glue on them.
