Hey guys,
My father just picked up a pair of used 1999 GTI's. I took them out on the water and they have a hard time starting up, and occasionally bogged while running. Everything else seems fine. I've got a few questions as I go to perform it's first tune up. I'm currently searching for the info I need but I figured I'd lay out a post to see if anyone could help.
1) I'm starting with spark plugs of course, what kind should I buy and where should I buy them? Do they come pregapped? What should they be gapped at?
2)Is it normal to have smoke out of the exhaust at startup? I figured the cylinders were a bit flooded with fuel as it was taking some time to fire up. The engines turned over alright, just not enough spark I'm assuming to get them running.
3) I'd like to replace the fuel filters, air filters, possibly carb rebuild. Can anyone give advice on where to buy parts and whether a rebuild is necessary or if maybe some carb cleaner will do the trick?
4) Impellers. Do I need to buy new ones now, or do I wait until they go bad? How should I go about checking their condition?
Thanks for any and all help.
