Hey guys,

My father just picked up a pair of used 1999 GTI's. I took them out on the water and they have a hard time starting up, and occasionally bogged while running. Everything else seems fine. I've got a few questions as I go to perform it's first tune up. I'm currently searching for the info I need but I figured I'd lay out a post to see if anyone could help.

1) I'm starting with spark plugs of course, what kind should I buy and where should I buy them? Do they come pregapped? What should they be gapped at?

2)Is it normal to have smoke out of the exhaust at startup? I figured the cylinders were a bit flooded with fuel as it was taking some time to fire up. The engines turned over alright, just not enough spark I'm assuming to get them running.

3) I'd like to replace the fuel filters, air filters, possibly carb rebuild. Can anyone give advice on where to buy parts and whether a rebuild is necessary or if maybe some carb cleaner will do the trick?

4) Impellers. Do I need to buy new ones now, or do I wait until they go bad? How should I go about checking their condition?

Thanks for any and all help.

1. ngk br8es...022 gapped

2. yup, maybe its water burn'n or oil

3. any inline filter will work, clean air filters with carb cleaner, and just need to tear carbs and xcellerator pumps off and go thru them, no need for rebuild

4. wait til you do the above, then take boat out, if it doesnt pop on plane, then maybe wear rings need replaced and/or impellors need refurbished...25 buks thru SBT.

Thanks man.

Got the plugs already, gapped them and installed them. I'll work on the rest tomorrow. Going to take it out on the lake to see how much the plugs helped.
