hello,
I just bought two 98 xp ltds and one operates perfect and the other takes on a ton of water. I’ve gone through all the checks I.e. fittings, exhaust, etc and still leaking. I got a carbon ring kit and I’m currently in process of trying to put it on only to find out there is not enough room on the drive line for everything carbon ring, floating ring , seal carrier. Is there a possibility the 98 doesn’t have/ need a carbon ring? Please help I’m losing my mind! Thanks. Tim

The 1998 used the carrier bearing/seal and not a carbon ring.
You have to install one or the other, not both.

As long as you have the clip groove on your driveshaft you can use the carbon ring. In 1999 they went back to the carbon ring on the XP.

Thank you for the fast reply! That would explain it, I’ve been looking for the groove in the shaft and nothing. Is it still a possibility of a leaking point even with the carrier bearing/seal?

No. The carrier bearing design does not leak since there is actually a bearing and seal inside.

The issue is that you have to keep it greased or the bearing will seize and lock to the shaft. When this happens it twists the fiberglass through hull fitting out of the ski and now you have an open 1-1/2" hole in the bottom of your ski.

Thank you very much, I really appreciate all of your expertise.
