Hey gang - I've bought and downloaded every Sportster, Speedster, and Challenger manual, looking for the wiring schematic of the MPEM plugs. Every PDF that includes a schematic section displays the message "Wiring schematic is not available at this time" (or a similar message). Does anyone have any documentation that can help me? Let me explain what just happened to me...
I just finished reholstering the seats from Jet Armor, and have to say they're fantastic and quite easy to do! Anyway, while removing the seat in front of the steering console, I must have disturbed a wiring harness without knowing it. After installing the seats, the engine wouldn't start. The beeper beeped correctly when the key was inserted. But when the start button was pressed, the gauges would turn off, the mpem would click, and nothing would happen.
I would have saved a lot of time if I had checked the connector #1, with the thick red and black wires, for power. But instead, I started checking continuity to the solenoids, and checking this and that... It turns out to be something easy to fix, but something I never would have expected.
The GND black mpem wire from the battery runs to a harness in the steering console, where it is distributed GND using a bus bar. Removing the cap reveals a bus bar that connects the wires, allowing all accessories to share a common ground. I had no idea that was there, and it started making me wonder how much easier diagnosing would have been if there had been a schematic.
Even a pinout of the MPem would be useful - I couldn't find that either. At least the boat is running right now, but I'd feel much better diagnosing in the future with a better understanding of the electrical system.
